That's a very interesting observation. Israel is actually like many other countries in the world in that it's a religious (Jewish) nation on one hand, but with a radically secular parliamentary government on the other.

I think what I meant was that we see the world politically as “Western” if the country has values of democracy and equality/tolerance and forward thinking and capitalism...probably from the old “east-west’ concept of The soviet Union, east/west Berlin and the mideast not as ‘western thinking or culture.”.

It's a country with its own agenda that uses whatever means at its disposal to influence U.S. policy to its own benefit.

An "ally" by definition has some kind of mutual defense obligations with its fellow allies. Treaty organizations like NATO and SEATO are perfect examples of groups of "allies" of the United States. The U.S. and Israel have no such mutual defense relationship at all, except in one very limited case (and an A+ in modern history for anyone who knows this).

When you get down to it, Israel is really no different than say, Saudi Arabia.

Much of Europe, for example. Ireland, Italy and (to a lesser extent) France are cases in point. Parts of Germany have government-run religious (Catholic) schools.

The governments of these countries are secular for the most part -- and in some cases radically so (France).
