GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- A Grants Pass man woke up in the middle of the night, and came face to face with an intruder. That intruder was a bear, and the man jumped into action.

Everett Skinner was awakened by his daughter in the middle of the night. Skinner grabbed his shot gun.

"I shot him once with the gun and that didn't bother him" skinner explained. "I put a third shot into his mid section and he was still growling and roaring" said Skinner. It took three more shots to finally put the bear down.

The bear eventually collapsed dead. Ironically, Skinner explained the bear did with his head next to a picnic basket. Skinner says it was all over in about a minute. He says the bear had run out when the two saw each other, and is sorry that he had to kill the bear, but says it had to be done.

Sounds like he wasn't loaded for bear!

"Birdseed is often times the first thing that bears get in trouble with," Churchill said, "and that starts the vicious cycle of them getting too comfortable with humans."

Every early Winter and early Spring we have problems with bears. They destroy our bird feeders and run off with the suet cake feeders. We keep the bird seed in the cellar in metal cans.

Friends learned the hard way to not keep the bird seed in metal cans on the porch. Not only do they open and eat the seed, they rip up the screen door and door trying to get in.

Smart people don't sleep with their windows open where bears live. Feeding the bears could be your body!

Well, I’m wondering about the carcass. I don’t suppose the man is allowed to have it butchered and put it up in the freezer? There’s a lot of meat on a bear.

Can't be allowed to keep the meat. It is contaminated by lead, at least six ounces of lead.

I had my first taste of bear meat when I was thirteen. My mom worked with a couple of guys who did a wild meat roast every year. It was delicious stuff, second only to the whole roast wild boar.

Somewhere I saw a video of someone shooting that thing. Not as bad as I thought it would be, but certainly not something I’d like to light off.

Lordy, why do they let 4th graders write these stories?

Examples:

1) Ironically, Skinner explained the bear did with his head next to a picnic basket.

&&&
Umm, the bear did what? Oh, it should be “died”.
&&&

2) He says the bear had run out when the two saw each other, and is sorry that he had to kill the bear, but says it had to be done.

^^^
The bear had run out where?
Why are those clauses just strung together like that?

This clown of a “reporter” needs to attend a workshop on sentence construction.

Yes, many of us on FR make dumb mistakes like this, but we are posting on the fly and are not getting paid to report.

One of the guys...I think there have been four bear home invasions recently in CO, as well as this one....tried to give the meat to a food bank. They wouldn't take it so he buried it. Some people deserve to go hungry, but it's usually someone else.
