Cash for Clunkers Gov. Website gives government ownership of your computer (really)
Glen Beck Show | 7/31/09

Posted on 07/31/2009 2:16:49 PM PDT by pabianice

Beck just showed an eyefill. The Government's Cash for Clunkers Website requires user to click on "accept" for a disclaimer. What a disclaimer! If you click "ok" it says in fine print that your computer is now considered the property of the Federal Government, including all content on your computer, and gives access to both the US and foreign governments. I am not making this up. Beck's computer froze because of heavy website use.

I am watching Beck’s show also. It is after you start the application process. You couldn’t pay me to go check it out to see if it’s true! The skeptics can do so if they like. I’ll believe what Beck showed until it’s proven false by someone more brave than I!

There is no application process on the web site. The process is automatic when you buy a car from a participating dealer. For all those who have seen this on Beck, tell us the website name he’s going to, and if it looks anything at all like the cars.gov web site. That would be most helpful.

From the Pournelle comment posted in #6, seems the URL in question is CASHFORCLUNKERSFACTS.COM. Doing a Whois on that shows that whoever registered that domain has cloaked themselves. Nothing too nefarious in that; it’s common nowadays. The domain is hosted in the U.S., seemingly in Houston.

Anyway, seems to me that Beck needs to calm down. It is not at all clear that the site is run by the Feds or connected in any way with the Cash for Clunkers operation. Someone might have secured the domain name and put that registration page up as a prank... or to make a point, if only that “people click through disclaimers without reading.”

I’m there and not seeing it. We need some screenshots. Me too. It's not there, I think Glenn's been pwned.

Same here. I use Firefox and maybe they want to force you to use Internet Explorer. Why — maybe there is already a gov’t mandated hack in the Microsoft product. A gov’t backdoor already there.

IF I was inclined to go to such a website, I would use an old Pentium III machine which has been on the shelf gathering dust, nothing fancy, 933mhz processor, 30 gig drive, 512 megs of memory, it’s no great shakes, if those federal f*cks wanted to come get THAT machine, they’d be doing me a favor!

"YOU give up right to your computer content by the click of one acceptance on the website..."

I do? What website? If it is true, why has no one posted the wording of the dislaimer here? ...I'm not asking in order to be inconvenient or mulish, but because I've looked and am not finding it, and I know my way around servers and PCs and HTML and such.

Frankly, I'm impressed that so many of us are approaching this with skepticism. It sounds too outlandish even for 2009.

Glenn had a screen shot of the message. Anyone watching in Central time zone it should come on around 6:10PM

Like alot of new internet website there are the hackers that will immediately register ‘look alive’ domain names with the purpose of attempting to steal personal information.

Beware all.

Cash for Clunkers gov’t website...check Glenn Beck’s website, as he showed it on a laptop on his show.

I cannot recall; I walked in just as he was already on the page. The site background was blue. A privacy notice was on the screen, asking you to AGREE or DISAGREE. If you hit AGREE, then another page comes up with that warning.

I am certainly not going to any of these sites to research it. I’ll wait for the clip of the show. :)

Pournelle’s comment is very interesting. He found the URL by googling. That’s a dangerous way of doing things. The site he entered may well have nothing to do with the cars-for-clunkers program, or the government. It sounds like a variation on a phishing sort of site, but that disclaimer Beck is frothing about sounds more like a prank, someone making a point.

Calm down, folks.

There is not a rebroadcast of Beck every hour. Central sees him from 4 to 5 pm.

There maybe a re-airing overnight.
