Republican and Democratic senators negotiating financial details of healthcare reform have made great progress and are on the verge of a deal, a key Republican senator said on Wednesday.
"We have made great progress. Every day we make some progress," Sen. Charles Grassley, one of the three Republicans from Senate Finance Committee involved in the talks to overhaul the healthcare system, told NPR radio.
"Will we get it done so we can get a bill to the other members by this weekend because there is a certain time you've got to give people to study it? We're on the edge, and almost there," the Iowa Republican said.
President Barack Obama has pinpointed healthcare as his top legislative priority and has pushed lawmakers to quickly reach a deal to rein in healthcare costs, improve care and cover most of the 46 million uninsured Americans.
Obama had asked the Senate and House to come up with initial draft bills before they leave for the August recess but this deadline looks increasingly unlikely to be met.
Lawmakers "wanted to do it right," said Grassley, noting that lawmakers are trying to revamp one-sixth of the economy.

I hope they are simply running out the clock.
The House is doing a great job of stopping the Democrats so it isn’t the entire GOP. Jim Demint and the vast majority of Republicans in the House are standing strong. We need to let all of them know that this isn’t no game and that no middle ground compromise will be accepted period. What don’t they understand about NO GOVERNMENT HEALTH CARE? Enough is enough.
I pray to Almighty God you’re right!!!
Oops, I meant to say that I will actively work to DEFEAT an repulsican that votes for an Obamaloon plan.
Good grief, I’m becoming almost as turdy with words as the head Loon.
He’s up in 2010
Progress?? It's definitely time for this jerk to retire.
We will see but it doesn’t hurt to remind everyone including Grassley. We aren’t to accept anymore socialism.
They’re all pigs. Lugar will probably support the dumb thing too!!!
I give up. I’m voting 3rd party from now on!
Sorry, read the chart wrong, we can go after Grassley next year. Snowe in 2013 and Enzin 2015. My bad. Don’t flame Iowans.
No. The Republicans aren’t that smart.
They are not idiots, they know exactly what they are doing. Disgusting. Simply disgusting. We are being played.
I hope they are simply running out the clock.
I think you got it now. Ha Ha. Good one.
There can be no compromise. Ditch the GOP. I’m done with them.
Just proof that anyone who thinks that voting for a senator for president is a good idea is a moron.
But between Obama & McCain as the final choice just goes to show how deep into the outhouse pit this country has fallen.
Can you elaborate a bit more on what Savage said? I’d be interested in hearing his reasoning.
It would never happen, but wouldn't be fantastic if the GOP and the Blue Dogs overthrew Pelosi and installed a new leadership team - a power sharing between the GOP and the Blue Dogs?!?!
We have to keep a full court pressure on and not let down our guard for a second or they will run over us and never look back.
Blue Dogs caving in the House was to be expected after I heard Ralph Hall, R-TX, and former Dem say they cannot be trusted and are not that much of fiscal conservatives. So the Blue Dogs have used a publicity campaign to make us think they are conservative, but they are not. Anyone that votes for Pelosi for Speaker is not conservative.
Already sent my note to Grassley. I should hire out to contact liberals because to send to my Congressman or my two OK Senators is preaching to the choir. I hear from all three that this is a bad bill and they are fighting to defeat Obamacare.
What a traitor!
That’s what I am thinking that the liberals will never go along with the changes.
