PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) - A ten-year-old boy left home alone with his sister used his mother's gun to shoot an intruder in the face, police said.
Late Tuesday, West Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputies received a call to a Port Allen apartment complex after several shots rang out from inside one of the apartments. "You are out here trying to work and for someone to come and do that and invade your home is very hard," the children's mother said. She asked to not be identified.
Deputies say Dean Favron and Roderick Porter knocked several times on the apartment door. The two young children, a ten-year-old boy and eight-year-old girl, stood on the other side, terrified. "He told his sister to be quiet and seconds later, they started kicking on the door and finally kicked the door in," said Sheriff Mike Cazes. The two children ran to their mother's bedroom closet.
In a panic, the ten-year-old grabbed his mother's gun for protection. "He did what I told him to do. I never told him to get the gun, but thank God he did," she said. Once the two suspects opened the door, threatening the kids, deputies say the boy fired a bullet into the lip of Roderick Porter. The two men were taken to the hospital by a third suspect, who is a 15-year-old juvenile. Once they got to the hospital, they were later arrested. "It's just hard. I don't understand why they would do that. I know they have little brothers and sisters and they wouldn't want anyone to break into their house," said the mother.
Each man is held on $150,000 bond. The juvenile, was taken to a local detention center. One of the suspects, Dean Favron, just finished serving almost seven years in prison for aggravated assault on a Baton Rouge police officer and two carjacking charges. He was released on June 6th.
Both men will appear before a judge next month.

Roderick Porter will not have an easy time in prison living down the tale of how he got shot by a 10 year old he was threatening.

Of course they wouldn’t want anyone to break into their homes and harm any of their family members. However, they dont’ care about others. Thank God the son had the presence of mind to do what he had to do to protect his sister and himself. He is a true little hero!!!

wonder if the children were black or white? either way, its awful! thank god that child had the courage to shoot, though now he is probably traumatized and will need some help. Just disgusting trash these thugs are!!!

It would be my guess that the children are probably black. The stats are that most crimes committed by blacks are against other black folk.

absent more info, one must wonder just where was Porters lip at the time that this shot necessitated two of them going to the hospital.....

Unless someone presents you a profile I can’t see how it would be done.
That has to be the one of the luckiest shooting victims I have ever read about. To get shot in the lip and not loose at least some teeth, jaw or life.

In New Orleans, the citizens are complaining that “crime cameras” don’t work. They blame the city. A murder the other day right under a non-working crime camera. The citizens blame the city and the crime cameras.
Nobody blames the criminals.
Nobody comes forward as witnesses - even though there often are witnesses.
But instead of relying on good old fashioned morals and civic duty to witness and testify, let’s blame the City and the crime cameras. Yeah, that will help.
If this had been another city, say New York city, the mother probably would have been arrested too. She may also have lost custody of her children, at least temporarily, for having a loaded weapon in a place that's accessible to children.
This is what liberalism brings communities. People who are defending their lives and their property are criminals, and violent assailants (kicking a door down is a violent act) are victims of a cruel and unjust society.
The boy just became a man. But in New York City, the city would have unleashed the Social Services Gestapo on his mom for leaving two children below the age of 13 unattended.
I've heard that nobody comes forward because of NO's revolving door justice. Murder suspects are commonly allowed bail, which gives them the opportunity to kill witnesses who have agreed to testify. Parole is granted early and often to convicted murderers which, again, gives them the chance to get even with hostile witnesses. Until the judicial system is made more stringent, no one is going to stick his neck out for his neighbors.
