ISLAMABAD: A missile, believed to have been fired by a US drone aircraft, hit a house in North Waziristan and killed five suspected Taliban militants, intelligence officials said on Friday.
‘The missile strike took place in Bahadur Kaley village, 30 kilometres south of Miranshah. One missile was fired from the US drone, which targeted a Taliban stronghold,’ one security official told AFP.
Resident Ahmad Raza told AFP he heard a loud bang and that Taliban in the area are saying five of their colleagues are dead.
‘The missile strike took place in Bahadur Kaley village, 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of Miranshah. One missile was fired from the US drone, which targeted a Taliban stronghold,’ one security official told AFP.
‘Five militants were killed and four others were injured in the US drone attack,’ a local security official told AFP.
‘They all belong to Baitullah Mehsud’s group and this area was their stronghold,’ the official said.
‘It is not immediately clear whether there were any foreign militants or some important militant figure among those who were targeted and killed,’ an intelligence official in the area added.
It was the fourth suspected US drone strike in nine days targeting alleged strongholds of Taliban warlord Baitullah Mehsud and comes with Pakistan widely expected to launch a ground offensive against his South Waziristan assets.
The targeted compound was located in a Mehsud redoubt on the border between the semi-autonomous tribal regions of South and North Waziristan.
Including Friday’s attack, the United States has carried out about 48 drone air strikes since the beginning of last year, most since September, killing about 465 people, including many foreign militants, according to a tally of reports from Pakistani intelligence agencies and district government officials.

Yes, isn’t it interesting how the ‘victims’ of US Drone attacks suddenly don’t rate the presumption of ‘Civilian-status’ now that Obama is at the helm. All are considered legitimate targets (as they should have been all along).
