WASHINGTON The Bush administration built an unprecedented surveillance operation to pull in mountains of information far beyond the warrantless wiretapping previously acknowledged, a team of federal inspectors general reported Friday, questioning the legal basis for the effort but shielding almost all details on grounds they're still too secret to reveal.
The report, compiled by five inspectors general, refers to "unprecedented collection activities" by U.S. intelligence agencies under an executive order signed by President George W. Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
Just what those activities involved remains classified, but the IGs pointedly say that any continued use of the secret programs must be "carefully monitored."

Look up. And shield your eyes.
The fact is, the phone numbers that were tracked inside our country were gotten from captured terrorists cellphones and laptops. That info has been put out several times. The press has an agenda and truth has no part in it.
Obamas poll numbers are falling. They need the evil Bush in the news again to take the heat off of Obama. And you are falling for it.
I read the posted article; you might want to try it.
LOL!!
He proves it by citing the press as truthful.
We've read government documents posted online. The press hides the truth. They do not reveal it.
Oh, you mean like that time when the liberal press reported the statement from the Sanford camp that the governor was out hiking the Appalachian trail and the actual truth of the matter turned out to be much worse than that, and we all found out that the lies were coming from a GOP official and not from the press?
You mean like that time?
Thanks, but I'll stick with the solid conservative wisdom of the Founders in the defense of liberty rather than your crapshoot speculations as to whether or not the press is lying this time.
Top story on YAHOO!
Bait and switch.
The press always lies. You won’t be on FR long.
So lib troll, how cute of you to make this point: the lies were coming from a GOP official
Only a lib would do that. You are so busted.
He got the ZOT!
I wondered how long it would take. Guess they were giving him all the rope that he needed. :-)
“I dont care if they found out every single thing about me.”
We know lot’s about you now Pops
But I promise that I will never tell anyone about you and ______ in the sixth grade.....
Your apparent insinuation these programs are an infringement on liberty is weak in the absence of any proof information gathered was used in any way other then to keep America free from terrorist activities.
This entire episode wherein this programs existence has been revealed while any specifics have been kept from us stinks of political maneuvering by a Party who is seeing it’s favor with the people being hammered almost on a daily basis. Not one official has claimed this program has done anything illegal and a few have said it was never even fully implemented.
It’s a smoke screen, or should I say ANOTHER smoke screen designed to deflect attention away from the taking down of America, piece by piece.
>>TROLL lurking.
Clearly TPTB at FR agree with you.
>>Two Ravens
>>Nobody by that name.
“those principles will always apply”
++++++++++++++++
You must be cognizant and aware of “contemporary reasons” or people from all persuasions will conclude you and those unchanging principles currently foolish. I don’t believe that’s the result you want. Perhaps you can elaborate on how you would protect this nation from the many grave dangers at its doorstep.
At least one key way is tracking some part of the communication between questionable overseas groups and (questionable) people inside this country. Saying that is not to deny the Ben Franklin principle you cited [Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.]
Go ahead, let’s discuss the details - but do you agree with that premise?
What is ‘essential liberty’?
And not a single documented instance where a citizen’s rights were violated. Not a single claim that some one was harmed by the surveillance. Well done.
++++++++++++++
People (including probably every libtard) are claiming ‘injury’ by default. Just because Bush’s name is anywhere associated with the program. In my view, knee jerk reaction.
I agree with the billboard’s that came out in the spring. Thank you President Bush and VP Cheney for keeping American safe.
TwoRavens - “This account has been banned or suspended.”

Hmmmm....
Good.
Point 2 is that there are some 10 individuals that were hauled off by the Feds and have never been heard from again. Those are ones without any terrorist connections.
