Palin has enthusiastically embraced "victim conservatism" . . .Like the "oppressed groups" of the left, these traditionalists have some valid complaints but channel them into a destructive ideology of polarization and resentment.

Mainline Republicans see 1960s Marxist-Alinsky street rabble-cum-Rat Party (formerly the traditional, patriotic Democratic Party) attacking a Party member who's not "one of them" and their response?

"Run away! Run away!"

Mainline Republicans don't have the guts to confront the Rat Party's tactics.. or is it something else?

Rockefeller still rules? A generation ago it was the Goldwater supporters outside the Republican mainstream were "purveyors of hate." Now, a slight improvement, we're purveyors of polarization and resentment.

Nelson Rockefeller according to Stuart Spencer (Rockefeller's public relations head) said, "We had to destroy Barry Goldwater as a member of the human race."

We have to destroy Sarah Palin as a member of the human race?

Douthat concedes she has to "bone up on the issues" if she is to have a political future

This seems to be the biggest complaint against her. It just doesent seem to me like that would be such a hard thing to do. I just dont get all the animus from "this " side of the aisle.

cathy young: “Its true that she has been attacked viciously by the Left and by members of her own party in terms I couldn’t repeat in front of my mother. But somehow I can’t resist the urge to pile on. Given the chance to defend her against these irrational and vicious attacks by her and my common enemy I can’t do it. If I speak up for her, they might come after me next.”

Take a breath...you’ll need it. Palin is not just a person, she is an idea. One that is lost on the sell out Republicrats.

“Yet these same conservatives have been devout admirers of Ronald Reagan, hardly a product of the Ivy League.”

Hardly an appropriate comparison: they worked for Reagan after he’d proved himself and have become Reagan snobs (no arrows, I’m a complete Reagan fan myself).

It is becoming abundantly clear that the most vocal criticism of Sarah Palin is originating from the lesbians and gays of both parties, .

Actually, it’s not “just” the left wing. The “country club” Republican elite is just as (if not more) scared of Palin. The continuing crescendo of abuse has reached the of “methinks they protesteth too much” level.

Indeed, Douthat concedes she has to "bone up on the issues" if she is to have a political future.

I keep hearing this mantra and frankly I consider it laziness. What exactly do they want her to bone up on? Clinton knew all the issues. Biden is a 'foreign policy expert.' Bush 41 was a seasoned beltway insider with extensive experience. They are all failures, or disappointments to say the least.

Know the constitution. Apply it's principles to every decision. Appoint wise executives who also know the constitution to your cabinet. Tell all of them except the SecDef to cut their departments in half. Veto everything that is not in plain language and has more than 10 pages. Support our allies. Make our enemies afraid. Wave as you board Air Force one.

We don't need another law scholar or bureaucratic deal maker. Government should be simple. Collect enough revenue to buy ammunition and gun oil. Keep the bayonets fixed pointing outwards. Repeal, deregulate or unfund everything else.

I guess that depends on what the question is...

From Wiki:

"Young (born Ekaterina Jung in Moscow, 1963) is a Russian American journalist and writer. She writes columns for Reason (monthly) and The Boston Globe (weekly), and is the author of two books and a number of articles. Her writing commonly espouses equality feminism."

Sarah Palin’s gonna prove herself. She’ll make liking and appreciating her easy. So let the experts complain. Let her be the loser, the divider, the not-smart-enough... and then watch and reconsider. My bet is it’s gonna be a WOW and a learning experience on how America is capable of righting herself, getting sane and sober again after a binge. My money’s on Sarah. Never mind odd notions of perfection: just think sanity, responsibility, honesty... America back on track again. She is the only viable candidate. And now’s the time to back her up and create consensus around her, no matter what shade of Republican. America hasn’t been in such danger since the Civil War. It’s gonna get ugly. Back Sarah Palin and make her strong for 2012. She’s the only real and viable anti-Obama.

As one who has cautioned people likewise that Palin would have to "bone up" on issues and intellectual background of her instincts, let me now suggest that Reason is NOT a "conservative" voice and by its very nature would be strongly opposed to anyone---male or female---who is a Bible-believer, anti-abortion voice.

Here’s the sad truth folks, we will never see another conservative president, it’s over, just as they destroyed her during the campaign they hounded her afterwards until she was utterly destroyed. Nobody, not a single true conservative can ever reach the White House again, it is impossible, the country has changed, no longer believes what it once did. Sarah is just an example, but it is over folks, and if you don’t believe that you are barking at the wind. Once government health care is installed, and it will be, you can never undo it, Obama is rolling so much socialism into this country that 50 years of Sarah Palin could not undo it. Have a nice weekend ...

I personally can't spare Palin, she fights. OTOH Ann Marlowe argues that elite women take Palin personally.

Why Elite Women Hate Palin

"If Sarah Palin is qualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, so am I!"

These words spoken by my friend Janet were true. But Janet hasn't put herself in Palin's position by running for office. She's made films and renovated houses, cushioned by inherited money. And since she doesn't have any kids, it's hard to say what would have gotten in the way if she'd wanted to be in politics. She didn't, though, any more than 99% of my women friends and acquaintances; she believes in cultivating one's own garden.

Most women I've talked with about Palin--all certified members of either the media elite or the just plain elite--take her nomination personally. ...

It's not so much that Palin isn't one of our own--an Ivy League type, or an Eastern preppie, or a self-made intellectual like Rice. It's not for the fake feminist reasons that "she's against freedom of choice" or "she didn't tell her daughter about birth control." (Though there is an element of hatred for her fertility, and the fact that it hasn't impeded her rise.) It's not because Palin only got a passport a few years ago and doesn't speak any foreign languages.

No, it's because Palin makes us look like the slackers we mainly are. We've had our bit of success, but we've also spent a lot of time smelling the roses. We've gone back to school to get another degree, volunteered in poor countries, devoted ourselves to a sport or a hobby. We've not had kids, or if we have, we've had one or two, and we've had nannies paid for by our work or our husbands or our inherited money. ...
