Sometimes good advice comes from the most unlikely of places. In this case, it comes from a Bush. In an interview with Tucker Carlson for Esquire magazine, Gov. Jeb Bush stated the most obvious fact of American electoral politics today: if the GOP is to rise again, it has to stop hating on Hispanics– or at least it has to stop appearing to be hating on Hispanics! He’s talking about you, Tom Tancredo, non-office-holding cable-news ranter.

[T]he demographics are going against us. Alex [Castellanos, Republican media consultant] told me today, for example, that there is not a district in California where Republicans are out-registering Democrats. Of the fifty-three districts — I think that’s right — not a single one has an improving situation. It’s striking. So you have a shift. There’s more minorities. The voter-registration efforts have been successful by Democrats, ACORN and the like. The swing voters are Hispanic voters in most of the swing states. And Republicans have done a poor job, sending signals that Hispanics aren’t wanted in our party. Which is bizarre.

The people that are on television are the loudest on the immigration issue. The emotion, the anger, is a signal. Put aside the substance, but just in terms of the language. It makes it sound like them and us. And the evidence is that after [the GOP] making major inroads, Hispanics have turned toward the Democratic party in the last two election cycles. Big time. Compare that to how my brother did and how I did and how other Republican candidates have done in the past and you can see a trend line that’s quite disturbing.

It’s possible [to oppose illegal immigration without coming off as anti-Hispanic] but it requires a tone that’s different. If you listen to the conversation, it’s not just words; it’s how they’re spoken. It has to be dispassionate, the language. But it hasn’t been.

Bush also says this smart thing on the favorite tack taken by Republican tea partyists in opposing Pres. Obama:

“Socialism” is pejorative in America, so people stop listening. People are tired of it. That word won’t stick. It’s a turnoff. It doesn’t help.

How sad is it that Joe the Plumber and Sarah Palin are the only people on a national level to call attention to the real agenda in Washington, and call it by its real name?

Jeb Bush stated the most obvious fact of American electoral politics today: if the GOP is to rise again, it has to stop hating on Hispanics– or at least it has to stop appearing to be hating on Hispanics!  Jeb, the citizens of the United States are who you work for, or should be representing.  Those citizens live by the laws of our nation, and they expect the same thing from foreign nationals who come here.  I don't know how you run your home, but it's my guess people don't walk through the back door and flop anywhere they like.  Why should our nation be run any different?  And if you wouldn't provide limitless lodging and access to all your resources in your home, why should the nation do it?

If you want equality, and I can't imagine that you would favor racial preferences, then you must expect the Mexican populace to go by the same immigration policies people from Poland do.  Otherwise you're a flaming race baiting racist.

Honestly, you, your consultant, and most of the Republicans in this nation haven't a clue when it comes to California.  The bread and butter issues here are still handled correctly when the voters have an opportunity, and the information gets out there.  Most of the recent Conservative information that has gotten out there was put out there by Conservative taxpayer groups and the like, because the RP has it's wallet welded shut, and it's head up it's... well never mind.  Of course you folks never miss a beat to declare this all a problem of racism, Conservatives hating Mexicans etcetera.  Say Jeb, do you realize what you're doing right here is the major cause of it.

If you'd pull your head out long enough to study the issue, you'd realize that our U.S. Citizens of Mexican heritage are fully capable of understanding right from wrong.  I guess you don't fully realize what an insulting dismissing ignorant slob you are.  Well, some of your fellow citizen sure do.

Jeb Bush is probably the most intelligent, astute politician out there right now after Newt Gingrich. Unfortunately, his last name is Bush and I wish it weren’t. He made a great Fla. governor. I know what he’s talking about. There has to be a way to stop alienating the fastest growing minority in the nation without compromising our principles. It’s the attitude, the way things are said. I think Jeb is just pointing that out. If we just break even on the Hispanic vote, we win. This is correct. It doesn't help that some of the strongest voices in the anti-illegal-immigrant debate actually ARE against all immigration, and regularly talk about the problems of having to deal with spanish-speaking people.

It makes it hard for people who oppose illegal immigration but don't mind controlled legal immigration to get the message out.

It makes no difference if it is the truth or not, if a word tends to make people stop listening to you, it’s not very useful if you are trying to persuade those people.

If you describe instead exactly what the democrats are doing, people become horrified and want to act. They will do so because of what they then know is happening, and it won’t make a bit of difference what you call it.

Just explain how the Democrat cap-and-trade bill forces homeowners to make expensive and unnecessary improvements to their house if they want to sell it or do anything that requires a building permit. I heard two ordinary housewives discussing this, and they were livid — neither were political, but they understood that they weren’t getting new kitchen cabinets because of the Democrats.

During the 1990s Jack Kemp, William Bennett, and Jeb Bush condemned Californian Republicans for backing Prop 187. Passed by 60%, it directed that legal residents only get citizen benefits.
