Sometimes good advice comes from the most unlikely of places. In this case, it comes from a Bush. In an interview with Tucker Carlson for Esquire magazine, Gov. Jeb Bush stated the most obvious fact of American electoral politics today: if the GOP is to rise again, it has to stop hating on Hispanics or at least it has to stop appearing to be hating on Hispanics! Hes talking about you, Tom Tancredo, non-office-holding cable-news ranter.
[T]he demographics are going against us. Alex [Castellanos, Republican media consultant] told me today, for example, that there is not a district in California where Republicans are out-registering Democrats. Of the fifty-three districts I think thats right not a single one has an improving situation. Its striking. So you have a shift. Theres more minorities. The voter-registration efforts have been successful by Democrats, ACORN and the like. The swing voters are Hispanic voters in most of the swing states. And Republicans have done a poor job, sending signals that Hispanics arent wanted in our party. Which is bizarre.
The people that are on television are the loudest on the immigration issue. The emotion, the anger, is a signal. Put aside the substance, but just in terms of the language. It makes it sound like them and us. And the evidence is that after [the GOP] making major inroads, Hispanics have turned toward the Democratic party in the last two election cycles. Big time. Compare that to how my brother did and how I did and how other Republican candidates have done in the past and you can see a trend line thats quite disturbing.
Its possible [to oppose illegal immigration without coming off as anti-Hispanic] but it requires a tone thats different. If you listen to the conversation, its not just words; its how theyre spoken. It has to be dispassionate, the language. But it hasnt been.
Bush also says this smart thing on the favorite tack taken by Republican tea partyists in opposing Pres. Obama:
Socialism is pejorative in America, so people stop listening. People are tired of it. That word wont stick. Its a turnoff. It doesnt help.
I’m no McCain fan. You just weren’t paying attention.
One of my best friends is Hispanic and she moved her entire family out of CA because it was turning into one big GANG.
I have friends from most nationalities except Eskimo. My hair dresser is Iranian and I work at a company where as a white, I am a minority.
Go take your "hate speech" somewhere else.
Less than 14% latino....in 2000, huh. That was 1.7% higher than the national average. But it’s up near 20% now.
Lets see how the other border fence hawks did in 2008 then......
In the CA 46th district Rorhbacher won 52-43%, (17% hispanic in 2000).
In CA 42 , Miller won 60-40, (24% hispanic in 2000)
In CA 25, McKeon won 58-42% (27% Hispanic in 2000)
In CA 44, Calvert won 51-48% (35% hispanic in 2000)
In CA 50, Bilbray won 50-45% (19% hispanic in 2000)
In Tx 32, Sessions won 57-40% (36% hispanic in 2000)
In Tx 24, Kenny Marchant won 56-41% (18% hispanic in 2000)
In Tx 14, Ron Paul regularly wins with more than 60% (25% hispanic in 2000)
In Tx Smith won 80-20% (18% hispanic in 2000)
But keep pretending, skippy.
that’s not a Jeb quote, that is the authors.
And you can put your "skippy" where the sun don't shine.
I wish the Bushes would just go away.
Jeb Bush, you and McCainiac are two birds of the same self-defeating chicken wing of the RINO party. Go away and take Juan “Amnesty” McCainiac with you.
It is not that the GOP hates Hispanics. That is a lie. The Hispanics refuse to vote for the GOP, not even to the pandering John Sidney McCain. You, Jeb Bush are an embarrassment to this country.
So “competitive” districts are the ones that only dems or rinos win?? LOL. You keep changing the rules skippy. First it was just hispanic populations, now its “competitive”.
Well Bilbray and Calvert and Rohrbacher were fairly competive, in a state that went 61% to 37% for the marxist quisling. So there’s three.
Now an uncompetive race was Mccain getting his ass handed to him and losing NM and Nevada and FL and CO, states carried by Bush, after fellating the hispanic activists just like you are doing, skippy.
I believe Jeb is referring to some stuff Tancredo said about hispanics in Miami, which were way off base, and just plain ignorant (he basically insulted Cuban Americans, a strong Republican base). That turned me of to Tank, but I forgave him, and he has appeared good to me again as of late.
Oh goodness. Jebthro must be thinking about running for POTUS. Family friends must need more Chinie business.
80% vote Democrat, are you fine with that?
the brown vote got O elected even though 55% of whites voted Queeg
#73: McCain recanted his past position by the election, which came after four years of immigrant bashing by Republicans.
I thought you meant by that statement that McC had the wrong "tone," i.e. he became, in your way of looking at it, another so-called "immigrant basher." Tell me what you did mean by "recanted."
Go **** yourself Jeb!
LaRaza, MEChA, Lulac, etc are waiting in the shadows to be granted citizenship so they can "reclaim their land."
Of course, we can't expect Jeb to understand because he's married to one of them from south of the border. I will NEVER vote for another Bush. Period. End of story!!!
Jeb can go straight to hell!
In the meantime why doesn’t hw move his sorry backside to Mexico!
I'm sorta jumping in here, uninvited....but did you hear about the Mexicans who held a huge "Farce of July" get together out here on America's birthday? I'm sorry, but THEY are the racists...the radical ones...not we who wish to keep our culture and our laws as is. LAWS. Ya know. Laws.
It's the pro-illegal immigration side that has made this about Hispanics. I've told Hispanics that Americans were promised a ONE TIME amnesty by Reagan, and that's a promise we expect our government to keep. It's not my fault most illegals are Hispanics. If most were Germans... I'd be just as upset, but you can be sure the Hispanics would not be fighting to legalize them. They are the ones who have made this about ethnicity.
me too ...This board is full of people who cant think about this issue without foaming at the mouth
Jeb Bush may be right - - clearly, McCain’s pandering worked miracles for him with the Hispanic vote.
Didn’t it?
