Potential Alzheimer's, Parkinson's Cure Found In Century-old Drug
ScienceDaily ^ | Aug. 18, 2008

ScienceDaily (Aug. 18, 2008) — A new study conducted by researchers at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland shows that a century-old drug, methylene blue, may be able to slow or even cure Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Used at a very low concentration – about the equivalent of a few raindrops in four Olympic-sized swimming pools of water – the drug slows cellular aging and enhances mitochondrial function, potentially allowing those with the diseases to live longer, healthier lives.

A paper on the methylene blue study, conducted by Hani Atamna, PhD, and a his team at Children's, was published in the March 2008 issue of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Journal. Dr. Atamna's research found that methylene blue can prevent or slow the decline of mitochondrial function, specifically an important enzyme called complex IV. Because mitochondria are the principal suppliers of energy to all animal and human cells, their healthy function is critical.

That kind of sounds like high doses of silver. I wonder if there is any connection because I have seen positive results in using colloidal silver for a few things that needed healing.

“UK scientists have developed a drug which may halt the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Trials of the drug, known as Rember, in 321 patients showed an 81% difference in rate of mental decline compared with those not taking the treatment.

The Aberdeen University researchers said the drug targeted the build-up of a specific protein in the brain.

Alzheimer’s experts were optimistic about the results, but said larger trials were now needed. “ BBC News 28 July 2008

Presenting the results at the International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease, Professor Claude Wischik said the drug may be on the market by 2012.

Fact is that this isn’t really news. The study you refer to is part if ongoing research. Time will tell. But as with all medicines, this will not be a panacea

I have no idea.

The blue pee went away in a couple of days; the blue eyes lasted a week or so.

It’s commonly used for malaria and other parasites.

I was sick as a dog (very high fever) and I believe the MB gave me a very sour stomach -— but that could have been the parasites.

The article says a few rain drops in a swim pool . I don’t know if that is what the nurtritionist study says BUT the research going in the UK is using the following dosages

“Patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease were given either 30, 60 or 100mg of the drug or a placebo.

The 60mg dose produced the most pronounced effect - over 50 weeks there was a seven-point difference on a scale used to measure severity of dementia” BBC News 28July 2008

Further along in the article it says: “But because high concentrations of methylene blue were known to damage the brain, no one thought to experiment with low concentrations.”

Who said, “It is the dose that makes the poison”? How are the mega dose lab rat testing scare mongering liberals going to handle this?

I believe the theory is that the article mixed up mg and mcg.

The researchers might actually be referring to mcg.

Seeing good effects at 60mcg ...

You are the winner. This was used as a standard treatment for malaria ( cost and effectiveness) until WWII when those treated in the PTO complained about those very side effects. It is making a come back as a treatment however because it is so very effective.
