VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict called on Tuesday for a "world political authority" to manage the global economy and for more government regulation of national economies to pull the world out of the current crisis and avoid a repeat.
The pope made his call for a re-think of the way the world economy is run in a new encyclical which touched on a number of social issues but whose main connecting thread was how the current crisis has affected both rich and poor nations.
Parts of the encyclical, titled "Charity in Truth," seemed bound to upset free marketeers because of its underlying rejection of unbridled capitalism and unregulated market forces, which he said had led to "thoroughly destructive" abuse of the system.
The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for "forms of redistribution" of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises.
Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result."

???? Holy Roman Emperor redoux?
Okay, who wants to be king of the hill?
[”world political authority”]
I saw this on Drudge much earlier and did not like it at all, and I am Catholic.
But the Catholic church itself, while great on holding its ground on some social issues such as abortion and gay intrusion into society, tends to go too far to the left on things like war, the death penalty, and this nonsense of “economic justice”.
Its not that I think the Pope is a bad guy or anything, and he's certainly not Antichrist. But they take a good idea too far. So while we should all want to avoid war, the church draws the line too far to the pacifist side. It makes exception for what it calls “just war”, but then proceeds to define that as pretty much only if your nation is invaded...ignoring the fact that nowadays, a military threat need not have an invading army. The days of the Nazi's massing at the border are by in large, gone.
Death Penalty, same thing. We hold life as precious, yes. But the line goes so far to the extreme as not to allow any differentiation between an innocent baby and a cold blooded murderer. Life is life? Hardly. One is innocent life, the other, while still certainly eligible for God's grace and forgiveness, deserves a human penalty....sometimes being death.
So we come to economic issues. The Pope comes out and of course gives the usual lines about how there should be justice and equality economically. He is free to do so because he speaks in rhetorical prose. Its kind of like the “campaign for clean water”. Who is going to come out against that? But in the real world, words mean things. To “balance” economies mean taking things from one to give to another, and if the “haves” wont give it up, force or coercion are necessary. I dont think he goes all the way down that path, and lets face it, who's really going to question him on it? O’Reilly? Hannity? Even if they could get the interview, they wouldn't dare ask the question because the Pope is a sacred cow on this issue. He is free to take that road because he wont ever have to answer the question “so, if the haves dont want to donate to the greater good, exactly how are we going to get their money away from them”? or “If a majority get together and agree to take things away from a wealthy minority, is that not stealing”?
But we know the answer. Socialism doesnt work, wherever its tried. They still have poor people. In fact, the more Socialist “economic justice” there is, the more poor there are likely to be.
It's the "Catholic Church."
Very true. And you don't seem to "see" that the Pope, a spiritual leader, has just meddled in temporal political affairs in a way so radical that no other Vatican document I can think of compares. It's astonishing. Simply amazing.
As I've said in earlier posts, I'm a cradle Catholic with clergy in the family. I cut my teeth on tales of Catholicism and spent many years in Catholic schools. So I'm not coming at this from a Catholic bashing perspective, like several others on the thread.
But no matter how gently I may want to deal with the Catholic faith, no amount of spin or denial can alter the Pope's words in this historic, radical Encyclical. It was released only seven days ago. I predict quite seriously that the uproar around it will grow so intense he'll have to alter it himself and remove the offending passages.
Suck it, Pope.
“The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for “forms of redistribution” of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises. “
And this item is pure Marxist thought..
Actually it’s really quite evil when you think it through.
Is this Pope trying to give the Left Behind authors new material for a whole series of books?
He is the Vicar of Christ, a prelate, the bishop of Rome. A well learned, and experienced man, who is a sheppard to his flock. I listen, and follow what he says.
Unfortunately, he doesn't have a degree in economics, finance or business. Just like I don't have a degree in theology. But, I do have degrees in management and accounting. Therefore, imho the Pope should stick with what he knows. I will do the same.

The Pope isn’t American. The Pope stands for God and last time I checked God was for any race nation creed blah blah that believes in him and death and rising of Jesus Christ.
Why wouldn’t he want a united planet? One that lived under peace with each other neighbors?
"Liberation Theology" has now reached the Vatican.
I vote we now make it a smoking crater...along with Mecca. Each philosophy is equally as dangerous and threatening to life, liberty and the American way.
Papacy = Antichrist
SURE.
THANKS.
END TIMES PING LIST—A— list.
I realize that various formal docs have included statements against Socialism and various tyrannical aspects of the NWO.
However, it STILL persistently sounds like the Vatican loves to have its cake and eat it too in a number of areas, including this one.
Sounds to me like folks must be exceedingly wary of anything that comes out of the Vatican.
This sort of pronouncement plus the various indications from the Vaitcan that they see ET’s as benign to benevolent . . . are very disturbing indications to the well read and thoughtful that the NWO and satan’s global government have ALREADY co-opted the Vatican lock stock and encyclicals . . . as well as the magistericals.
LOL.
Sigh.
YUP.
ALL THERE.
There, INDEED.

Somebody is getting way out of their area in a dangerous way
I want to rule the universe myself
Perhaps I could then order takeout or delivery of shrimp, ribs, and Corona at 3am
Maybe if I wore my neat robe I could get people to do things for me
The pope calls for one world government in control of the economy! I guess he does not read his Bible! The woman rides the beast!
Man is God ever setting the stage for the return of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. World economies in shambles, Verichip i.e., the “digital angel” is going full bore in their program to chip the masses for “security” and for “protection of their identity”. Also... no cash or credit cards to get lost or stolen... and now the pope calls for a one world government to control the monetary system to clean up the mess and to do it all... how concenient!
God has told us all how it all works out in the end. He has a plan and nothing in heaven or on earth will thwart it.

INDEED.
WELL PUT.
THX.
I fiercely disagree.
He is sanctioning, essentially,
at least some very clear elements of the NWO GLOBAL GOVERNMENT to end up ran by satan.
How can anyone read those key paragraphs any other way?
Boggles the mind.
Scripture is clear who will lead the world government at least for 3.5-7 years until Armageddon.
ANONE speaking to any degree in behalf of such a satanic government
IS CLEARLY ON SATAN’S SIDE.
There’s no middle ground on this as much as the Pope seems to enjoy riding the barbed wire fence.
AMEN! AMEN! AMEN!
Forgive my lack of capitalization, it was not intentional. In fact, I had to look at your post a couple of times to realize what I did wrong.
