Krauthammer: Palin isn’t a serious candidate for president
Hot Air ^ | July 01, 2009 | ALLAHPUNDIT

Oh yes, he went there. We’ve been having a running debate on Twitter this afternoon about Sarahcuda and my contention that criticism of her is verboten among righty blog readers, HA’s included. This thread will be an interesting test case. Most of the heat Kraut takes will be for his contention that “You cannot sustain a campaign of platitudes and clichés over a year and a half if you’re running for the presidency.” Didn’t Captain Hopenchange do exactly that? Well, yes and no. Granted, the most memorable line he uttered in 18 months on the trail was “Yes we can,” but he’s done countless policy interviews, debated Hillary 20 times and McCain three, and held numerous press conferences. The TOTUS jokes are fun but The One’s perfectly capable of straying off script when need be. Is Palin? She seems at ease when discussing energy or life issues but the jury’s still out on most everything else, which is why Kraut feels comfortable asserting that she hasn’t (yet) brushed up on national policy the way we all thought she would.

The only person who can erase this perception of Governor Palin is Governor Palin herself.

Well I guess we can all just set back, now that you solved that problem. Maybe, if we ask God can help, then again, maybe He has washed his hands of us, since we seem to be more interested in Homosexual rights than our Republic.

Sarah brought the base out and galvanized them into action. She is in the race and will win in 2012.

From your keyboard to God's ear. I pray that you're correct. I pray also for a miracle that will vanquish Barack Obama and restore limited government, free markets, self-determination, and Judeo-Christian values to the U.S.A.

I am a HUGH Palin fan, but she does need to shore up her weak spots. Every person who runs for president has to face this. Republicans have to work even harder, because the Monica Media will work hard to misshape their public images. Democrats like Obama can get over by reading teleprompters and spewing platitudes because the Monica Media cover for them.

Very well said...except that Obama has demonstrable skills at working off-teleprompter. That Rovian meme hurt more than helped, as many people underestimated BHO.

Who was the last candidate that you supported for president who actually won? George Bush perhaps? Maybe not.

Gorge Bush was the last presidential candidate that I supported who won.

The elusive elements that knuckle-heads like you don’t understand is that we have to come together to win an election. I compromise all the time. I highly doubt that you comprise in the least. Even thought Reagan himself said that progress comes in small increments .. slowly through compromise.

You’re more the whack them over the head type.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Krauthammer is right. What’s Palin done lately to portray herself as a serious candidate conversant with the issues, taking on Obama about the wrecking ball he’s taking to the economy and the culture? She’s been having spats with late-night comedians. She’s done nothing since the campaign to show she has the substance to be president. She’s nothing more than a celebrity. Isn’t she supposed to be writing a book? Whoopee.

Republicans should nominate a grownup to run against Obama. Someone who can speak in depth on important issues and who can offer solutions. She’s not doing either.

You have a spy cam posted to catch her every waking moment? Gov. Palin knows what she knows and she knows what she doesn’t know—nobody else does and all the idle speculation is just a waste of time.

then she can bring in all the policy wonks later.

After all Policy wonks are for sale, some pretty cheap, judging from the comments here.

It’s almost like there’s a grand anti Palin conspiracy on our side.

Yeah, it's as if some conservatives actually want a competent, electabled candidate, isn't it!

Bill Clinton was very inexperienced, but as we know, was very well polished in a debate. Bush 43- Big State governor, grew up surrounded by politics at a high level, his experience was questioned many times and he had to prove himself. John Kerry-Served on Foreign Relations Committee, has to count for something. Barack Obama-Can’t even begin to defend. He would never make it out of a Republican primary with his creds. John McCain-As much as everyone hates him, you cannot deny his foreign policy chops. Probably the strongest Senator in the last 20 years IRT foreign policy.

If she is going to get my vote, she needs to show me something IRT foreign policy. This is something that is very important to me and we cannot afford on the job training (like we currently are experiencing). BUT, she can do it if she applies herself and I think that is what Kraut was pointing out.

With Barack’s lack of ability to govern and her charisma and conservative beliefs it could turn into a fifty state blow out. Could be a classic case.

Don’t underestimate this woman, she is the future of the Republican party.

Okay, some of you folks who went ga-ga over Krauthammer need to take note. Everytime Sarah steps out in public things happen. She doesn’t retreat from the scurrilous attacks either, she continues to govern Alaska in a way that I wish to hell Perry did (TX), always innovative, always traveling to speak to the citizens of AK

Are these the signs of a person who doesn’t take things seriously?? Like hell! Away with you Krauthammer.

Actually, as one who lives in Alaska and who watches and reads the news here regularly, she does far more of that thatn you hear about. But one has to read beyond the main stream media. I would prefer that she take care of business right here in Alaska reight now-such as she did recently with the pipeline agreement. She has been over with the troops recently and had much to say. As for the Letterman thing, I would have lost all respect for her if she had let that go. As a father of 3 teenage girls I would have kicked Dave’s ass if at all possible to get my hands on him.

If people want to believe the smears and lies against gov. Palin, then they deserve Obama for a second term because that is what they will get.

On the other hand, there are those who believe the truth about her, and we deserve someone better than these two choices.

Gov. Palin needs to put in a Herculean effort and make great strides to get up to snuff for the next time around if she is to be a serious candidate.

You know, a question that I have posed many times for Palin supporters is: "What was Governor Palin's answer to the Colonel's fear question?" and all I get are crickets in response. If Gov. Palin supporters can't even address such straightforward things, how do we expect her to get to the next level...note that the Obama campaign didn't even need to pull out the heavy artillery on her, as McCain/Palin couldn't even get past level 1.

you need to be conservative in fiscal, military, AND social issues.

Barry Goldwater was short on item three, and so is Krauthammer. Libertarians for the most part are, and they are well represented on this forum.

I'm going to try one more time to explain what FR is all about. Jim Robinson

“You cannot sustain a campaign of platitudes and clichés over a year and a half if you’re running for the presidency.”

Isn’t that what Mr. “Hope & Chage” Obama did? Worked for him.

I have just one thing to say here, and yes I know this is not the 1830’s. Lincoln only had about 6 Weeks of formal Schooling. He was self-taught. When he was finally elected, it was because he had fewer enemies than his opponent.

Sarah Palin holds our VALUES. This next election cycle is going to be about core Values. There is no other single motivating factor for conservatives in this cycle.

Liberals are well aware of this factor and seek to keep Conservatives divided. Sarah UNITES us, and that alone makes her invaluable.
