SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California governor's office says federal officials are threatening to seize six state parks if they are closed to help balance the state's budget.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed closing 220 state parks.
But the National Park Service warned in a letter to Schwarzenegger that six of those parks are on former federal land that could revert to the U.S. government if they are not kept open as parks.

Can you elaborate on your response that exempted Texas? Texas is the exception to what? Thanks.
Texas, the state, owned all the land within its borders upon joining the union. Came from being its own country.
Hawaii is apparently the same, and perhaps the original 13.
In my mind, I would have 50,000 soldiers “fix the border” issue; suspend all Federal pensions (save military) and enforce 2-term limits, period.
No more Dept. of Education, EPA, Energy, etc.
20% flat tax, no deductions.
I think there would be real outrage on this thread if it were a state other than California. Imagine if the Federal Government was going to ‘take’ your state parks.
Good. Looks like the illegals will have to have their BBQ’s elsewhere.
why are parks closing.... just because there is no money to “man” the parks with rangers... they should remain open to the people who “own” them.
idiots all.
t
They do that and literally millions are out of here in one fell swoop, myself included.
No, he eats pie too.
What's this "US Constitution" of which you speak?
~Obama
Good idea:
-Northern
-The Gay Bay
-The Valley
-Hollyweird
-San Deigo
Yup.
And therein lies a good idea. It's high time to start flying that again, right along with my American Civil Flag (sans gold fringe of course :-)
California was a Republic before it becamse a state. I do not believe it was ever a territory.
The federal government “threatens” to take over the administration and upkeep of 6 California state parks:
How is that a threat, exactly???
OOOh, to the REST of us!
I get it now!
Also see the Louisiana Purchase and the purchase of Alaska.
Or less.
Picture a place where the parks (and everything else) was efficiently administered....
Besides, you could get one of those "Golden Eagle Passports" or whatever it's called, that would let you into parks anywhere in the nation.
I detest the Park Service.
Note to organizers: Sure your campout has mostly Californians coming, but future campouts need to be in federal or Oregonian parks.
Look it up. The Bear Flag Republic lasted 25 days in 1846 and disbanded as soon as US Army forces showed up in Sonoma. Mexico ceded California to the US in 1848 and it became a state in 1850. From at least 1848 to 1850 California was a territory. When the 49ers set out for the gold fields, they weren't heading to the Republic of California. They were heading to the California territory.
Thanks, but I know how and why the feds have these lands. The point I was trying to get across was why should they have this land. When a State got carved out of a Territory, all the land should have been ceeded to the State.
After all, the name of the country is the United States, not the United Federal Lands.
What do you think? Shouldn't the land inside a State belong to the State, and not the feds? If the feds want some land from a State for a park or something, they can pay the State for it.
I know, they already paid someone, or something, for that land (and called it a Territory) and turned it into a State (or States), but after having carved out a State, then deciding to take some back (now the State can't get any tax revenue from this land), the fed should pay for it. The feds are gobbling up State land at a fast clip as it is now (look at what Clinton did). Maybe something like this would slow that down . . .
