Phony, that is, in the sense that the White House knows in advance the questions that’ll be asked, which makes the questioners de facto plants of the most transparent administration evah. I have no big problem with The One putting on a pageant — that’s standard presidential stagecraft in a television age — but I do have a problem with the NYT taking care to note the “orchestration” when Bush pulled this while neglecting to mention it this time.
It’s in keeping with the media’s narratives about Dubya and Obama, though, the former shifty and stupid and therefore dependent on softballs, the latter “open” and ingenious and no longer required to prove his ability to handle tough questions.
Also, and needless to say, while Thomas’s and Chip Reid’s effort is appreciated, O doesn’t need to shut out the press in order to “control” it. That’s what Rahm’s mad manipulation skillz are for, and what Rahm (and Axelrod) can’t control, old-fashioned liberal bias can be trusted to take care of. As lefty rag Vanity Fair admitted early last month:

If Gibbs had been GW’s Press Secretary he would have been laughed out of office by now.
The “press” corps has gotten tired of Gibbs non-answers to their questions. He won’t change. He is the perfect person for the job, in that he has no intellect to speak of, and will not vary from the WH script, mainly because he can’t. He’s as adept at fending of their questions as a five year old is at their first Tee-Ball swing. .....

True enough, but the Bush WH saw the press as antagonistic, so they had to have an intelligent person to go to battle. FUBO, OTH, sees the press as their sycophantic allies, so Gibbs is a perfect man, an idiot that speaks in twisted riddles.............

She is actually pretty inspiring in this clip, as is Chip. I encourage everyone to watch this...the dam is breaking. The press is getting angry. If Helen Thomas says things like, “we’ve never had such an attempt to control the press in the White House,” I think people in the press will begin to have the courage to speak out against this administration. She’s a tough (albeit ugly) old bird!
The press corps did it to themselves because they were just out there licking Bambi’s toes every time he appeared, and they transferred this to Gibbs, but he apparently lacks whatever charm it is that Bambi seems to have for the press.
Still, it would be nice if at least one or two of them woke up and objected to this. I’m just surprised it was Helen Thomas, she of the terminal Bush Derangement Syndrome and the “essay questions” that essentially stated her positions and asked the interviewee what he thought of them.

I'm not convinced he's all that "useful", I don't think his elevator goes all the way to the top floor.
