North Korea Ratchets Up Its Threats
IBD Editorials ^ | June 24, 2009

Nuclear Terror: North Korea's threats have escalated to new levels in recent days. Ordinarily, this might not be a big concern. But it's an unstable regime with nuclear weapons, so we have to be ready to act — and fast.

President Obama doesn't seemed too concerned about the North Korean threat, saying the U.S. has "dotted the I's and crossed the T's" on a potential response to the country's increasingly hysteric provocations. On Wednesday, for example, it threatened to "wipe out" the U.S. "once and for all."

It sounds laughable, since North Korea's military doesn't match up too well with ours. And yes, it could just be routine saber-rattling as we near the 59th anniversary of the start of the Korean War, which ended in a truce.

Still, there are signs of growing desperation in North Korea as family members and the military jockey to succeed the country's ailing totalitarian despot, Kim Jong-Il. This raises the risks for us.

In April, North Korea tested a new long-range Taepodong-2 missile capable of hitting Hawaii and parts of the continental U.S. In late May, it conducted an underground test of an atomic bomb. After both the U.S. and U.N. condemned its moves, the North Koreans stalked out of nuclear disarmament talks and — what else? — again threatened the U.S.

Earlier this month, North Korea suspended its truce with the U.S. — in effect, saying the Korean War has restarted.

Just a week ago, the U.S. detected a ship leaving the North Korean port of Nampo. The Kang Nam is thought to be carrying illicit nuclear material and is being shadowed by the USS John S. McCain, a U.S. naval destroyer.

N. KOREA “HELPING BURMA WITH WMD” (TOP STORY!)
Chosun Ilbo News, Seoul ^ | 25 June 2009 (59th anniversary of start of Korean War) | Chosun Ilbo, Seoul, S. Korea (English)
Posted on June 25, 2009 12:55:56 AM PDT by AmericanInTokyo

N.Korea ‘Helping Burma with WMD’North Korea is helping Burma with the acquisition of so-called weapons of mass destruction, with the U.S. claiming that the North Korean ship Kangnam is headed for the Southeast Asian country.

The Burmese junta “has bought technologies on the open market that are potentially usable in a nuclear program, and North Korean arms companies involved in the nuclear trade have become active” in Burma, the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday said quoting speculation by U.S., Asian and UN officials.

“North Korea has used [Burmese] ports and airstrips to transfer arms and contraband to third countries, including Iran,” the daily claimed.

It said several Burmese citizens, some of them expatriates, “have claimed direct knowledge of a nuclear weapons program, including a reactor under construction near Maymyo.”

Quoting Yale University’s Center for the Study of Globalization, the paper said relations between the two isolated dictatorships are getting closer to the point where North Korean technicians are working at the construction of underground tunnels connecting basement floors of buildings near the remote new Burmese capital of Naypyitaw.

The daily admitted U.S. and UN officials “acknowledge there is no ‘smoking gun’ to back fears of nuclear proliferation inside the Southeast Asian country.” But it added U.S. and Asian diplomats “draw strong similarities between the military governments in Pyongyang and Naypyitaw and their efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction as deterrents against U.S. power.”

It quotes Michael Green, a former senior official the U.S. National Security Council, as speculating that given “North Korea’s nuclear trade to Syria, its attempts to sell Scuds to Myanmar, and its ongoing sales of conventional arms, there’s reason to be worried about a WMD relationship.” englishnews@chosun.com / Jun. 25, 2009 13:11 KST

North Korea didn’t beat us BUT they think they did and that’s what makes them a danger.

Preparation Under way for N. Korean Technicians to Evacuate from Iran

It has been revealed on June 20 that N. Korea’s missile and nuke technicians, currently staying in Iran, started preparation to evacuate from Iran, according to a credible source on Mid-East. It is not certain that they will actually leave, but they are definitely preparing for the departure when Iranian (political) situation becomes ‘fluid.’

N. Korean technicians are at multiple sites in Iran, cooperating with Iran the development of missiles and other projects.

In addition to securing personal belongings, the preparation includes equipments and documents which should be kept in secret, such as computers. This is to prevent the evidence of the close collaboration on missile and nukes from being discovered.

The reformist group in Iran are mounting protests over the fraud in presidential election, and (political) tension is rising.

Burma restricts reportage on North Korean vessel
Mizzima News ^
Posted on June 25, 2009 8:34:56 AM PDT by maquiladora

Chiang Mai (mizzima) - Burma’s Censorship Board has restricted local journals from reporting on the progress of the North Korean vessel, Kang Nam.

The restriction came after a local journal, Pyi Myanmar, in its international section, printed an AP story on the North Korean vessel, which is believed to be heading towards Burma.

“I think if we run the story like today’s edition of the New Light of Myanmar, we might get permission. But others will not get it. I have heard that the Censorship Board failed to check on their story, that is why it was published,” a local journalist in Rangoon, told Mizzima.

The Pyi Myanmar journal published on June 25, carried a translated version of the AP story, which said that the United States on June 19, had sent a naval destroyer to monitor and to check on the North Korean vessel, which is suspected of carrying illegal weapons.

The global media has reported that a 2,000 ton weight vessel called Kang Nam, left a North Korean port on June 17, and was heading towards Burma.

However, Burma’s state-run newspaper, New Light of Myanmar, on Thursday reported that the North Korean vessel was MV Dumangang and is a cargo vessel carrying rice, from India.

According to the paper, the Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea owned MV Dumangang cargo ship, is due to arrive in Burma, from India’s Kolkata on June 27, to load 8,000 tons of rice.

Besides, the paper revealed that the Burmese military government had no information regarding the Kang Nam as reported by the international media.

N.Korea warns of ‘dark clouds of nuclear war’
Google News ^ | 6/25/09
Posted on June 25, 2009 9:13:24 AM PDT by FromLori

SEOUL (AFP) — North Korea warned that “dark clouds of nuclear war” are gathering over the peninsula and vowed to strengthen its atomic arsenal as it marked the anniversary of the 1950-1953 conflict.

Rodong Sinmun, newspaper of the ruling communist party, accused the United States and its ally South Korea of trying to provoke another war with their pledge of a US nuclear “umbrella” over the South. “A touch-and-go situation has been created on the Korean peninsula... with dark clouds of a nuclear war gathering as the hours tick by,” it said in a lengthy commentary marking the anniversary, carried by the official news agency.

The paper said a new war could break out any time and the North would continue to strengthen its nuclear arsenal.

“As long as the US hostile policy continues, we will never give up our nuclear deterrent and even strengthen it,” Rodong said. The conflict began with a North Korean invasion on June 25, 1950. It ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty, leaving the communist North and capitalist South still technically at war. Cross-border relations have soured since a conservative government took office in Seoul in February last year with a firmer policy towards the North.

And international tensions have grown since Pyongyang’s long-range rocket launch in early April and its nuclear test in late May.

The North has also fired short-range missiles, renounced the truce in force on the peninsula and repeatedly warned of possible war.

At a US-South Korean summit in Washington last week, Washington reaffirmed its commitment to provide the South with a nuclear umbrella.

“N. Korea Warns of Nuclear ‘Fire Shower’ Attack”
Thursday, June 25, 2009

SEOUL, South Korea —

SNIPPET: “South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that the North may fire a Scud missile with a range of up to 310 miles or a short-range ground-to-ship missile with a range of 100 miles during the no-sail period.

U.S. defense and counterproliferation officials in Washington said they also expected the North to launch short- to medium-range missiles. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.

North Korea had warned previously it would fire a long-range missile as a response to U.N. Security Council condemnation of an April rocket launch seen as a cover for its ballistic missile technology.”

Japanese TV screenshot from last night. Says warhead missile feared to be launched by North Korea within the next 10 days. Of course, these will probably come in multiple shots, from Wonsan area and Kittaeryung areas toward Japan (Sea of Japan). We will just have to see. Oh, also, I hear the State Department has brilliantly decided to de-invite the Iranians for hot dogs to our US embassies around the world, on 4th of July (DPRK Launch Day, most likely):
