Yeah but his office didn't have a com path to him. They didn't hear from him from Thursday to Monday

Assuming this is true I just can't figure what's going on in the heads of pubbies anymore. I haven't self-described as a "Republican" for a very long time now and I don't see a lot of people jumping on the GOP bandwagon anytime soon.

But conservative FReepers already know this. This is depressing.

Everybody is thinking the worst. I’m wondering if he wasn’t in Argentina on state business that had to be kept discrete.

His wife is a source. Cannot believe people are still defending a Governor for being gone with people not knowing where he was and the story changing.

I liked Sanford but this is unreal. He left the door open a mile for speculation when his wife did not know where he was and now his story is different from his office.

Some people still don’t see anything wrong but if he was a DemocRAT, they would be going after him IMHO.

No, being above reproach isn’t enough, because the media can make up and distort anything about you or your family, it no longer matters how well you comport yourself. And I will not hesistate to criticize FReepers who pile on here when they don’t know what happened and swallow these media accounts without question. I don’t blame Gov. Sanford, I blame those who lie and distort and smear him. There’s a small contingent of FReepers who hate his guts because he is one of the most principled Conservatives in elective office today, perhaps the most principled Conservative Governor in the country. Just like with Palin, he has to fight a vicious RINO clique out to destroy him within his own state. Interestingly, some of the names associated with this story are the very people who happen to be a part of that clique. I hold THEM responsible for their role in this.

BTW, back in 2006, in my state of TN, we had our Democrat Governor vanish for weeks that didn’t get a fraction of the coverage this did, and it happened to be during the election season when the Lt Governor was an incompetent, senile man in his mid-80s. They didn’t turn anything over to him. Of course, our Gov is a Democrat, and we all know they get a pass for everything... unless they do anything Conservative.

and you blame the media?

No blame here, I said "I admit I don't know" in my original post. Now I'm sure I don't know what really happened but it sounds much more serious to me.

Personally I like facts more than outrage. :0)

Remember Doug Wilder? Back in the Wilder administration, we needed milk cartons with his picture on them, he was gone so much. “Have you seen our governor? Call the General Assembly in Richmond!”

What discourages me is that fellow Republicans in SC—guys like Bauer and Knotts—have used a compliant, Sanford-hating press to take what is, at worst, a somewhat bonehead move by Sanford and turn it into some massive scandal. And what’s worse, now look at all the FReepers piling on—he’s “cruising for young boys?” He’s gay? He’s having an affair? What the HELL, people. You’re letting the liberal media stampede you any direction they want! USE YOUR BRAINS, FOLKS!

Sorry to vent -- I'm sure there's NO girlfriend (crossing fingers).

I just hate that most politicians can't seem to keep their PECKER in their pants, and ignore the fact they are risking their family, their political career (unless they're a Dem) and their Party for their indiscretions.

I'm sure Sanford has a legitimate reason, which, IMO he does NOT necessarily have to divulge. You just know, if/when he does, reporters will be climbing all over each other to verify his story. The freakin' NY Times will fly the reporters in, just like they did Palin. I can see it now -- reporters repelling down a rope from the helicopter, with notepad and laptop in tow, to talk to anyone who may have been a witness to Sanders disappearance!

If he's asked at the next press conference where he was, he should ask reporters why Obama has STILL not divulged his records from Occidental, Columbia and Harvard. Let them choke on that question ... or ignore it -- like they would anyway.

I already am. I think you all ought to be ashamed of yourselves for passing judgment when you don’t know what happened... or worse, making up sleazy allegations. Are you going to apologize for it ?

Listen, one week ago, the supposed conservative paragon Ensign demonstrated a seriously HUGE SET of clay feet. can we look at this in the context of that very recent event? questioning with a jaundiced eye the actions of a politician, conservative or not, is not being a hysterical nitwit swallowing media bias, it’s being REALISTIC. Sanford was not with his family on fathers day. nuff said, i am suspicious without reading a single media account of where he was.

Sanford’s wife, his office, and State Police didn’t know where he was so why is the fault of the media. They are reporting on a Governor that disappeared without his security team and didn’t even call home on Father’s Day and it is the media’s fault? Give me a break!

The media is bad enough but in this situation, Sanford let the door open a mile wide for them to report.

I agree with you and saul alinsky’s msm will use any chicanery to thwart a conservative America. I for one believe Sanford was in contact with his staff and or provided a means for communication.

If he is found to have done something unethical in his position as governor, “then let the chips will fall where they may.”

Governor Sanford is a Repub, so the Obumunist msm and allies have already found him guilty of any ficticious wrong doing.

i guess we will see about that. one week ago, the same could have been said for Ensign, could it not? pardon my skepticism, but conservative politicians have demonstrated FEET OF CLAY in spades.

Looks like the guy had a nervous breakdown or something. He's under alot of pressure.....its happened to others. Give him some space.

I'm not condemning the dude. He's under a lot of pressure. Needs his space. Cool. I know I would dart off, incommunicado, to Argentina every now and then if I had the means.

It doesn't mean he's a bad person. Just that he's not presidential, and possibly not gubernatorial, material. Taking the phone off the hook is a luxury that the chief executive of a state or country does not have.
