Summer solstice beings in the UK on June 21, 2009 at 5:45 UT
Sol + stice derives from a combination of Latin words meaning "sun" + "to stand still." As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky.
As a major celestial event, the Summer Solstice results in the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The Northern Hemisphere celebrates in June, but the people on the Southern half of the earth have their longest summer day in December.

Amen lily!
Winter was aweful here!
Bring back global warming!
Summer time, and the living is easy, catfish are jumpin, and the cotton is high. We are 1:15 minutes away. How sweet it is.
Then Washington had to go and screw it all up with daylight savings time. Sheesh, no wonder we have globul warming with all these years of added daylight.
Exactly 30 months to the day to the winter solstice of December 21, 2012 .....
It was 103 degrees at my house today. I’m pretty sure Summer got here early.
Happy Birthday to me... and my dad... on father’s day no less. :)
