President Barack Obama says the biblical command to "love thy neighbor as thyself" is as pertinent now as ever.

The president said Friday that an entire community suffers when some members cannot pay their mortgages or find jobs. He called on Americans to work together to build a better future for everyone, including immigrants.

Matthew 22:39. I’m pleased, actually. To this point, it has seemed BO hasn’t got the foggiest idea about Christianity. However, there is a prayer campaign for his conversion. Maybe it’s having an effect.

Even if the quote is correct, remember that Satan quoted some scripture at Jesus to tempt him.

I know that this is scripture... But where does it say that loving your neighbor means paying their mortgage, health care, welfare check, etc...

30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Mark 12: 30-31

Did you search under "neighbor" or "neighbour?" Old English spelling. It would be interesting to hear what Mr. Obama's definition of "neighbor" is. Something tells me its a bit different from what Christ had in mind.

A NT citation: Luke 10:27-28:

27 [A certain lawyer] answering [Jesus] said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

28 And [Jesus] said unto him, THou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

“Go to the ant, consider her ways,oh sluggard, and be wise.”
Or something to that effect, right? (from memory)

This is indeed scripture, which has already been pointed out. However, he used it to support his contention that the Bible supports the nanny state.

The Bible does no such thing. Jesus teaches that we as private citizens should help one another. Jesus taught us all to be personally charitable to our neighbors.

..since others have already cited the Scripture, here's a good one:

More to the point, how is loving your neighbor compatible with holding them at gunpoint to extort their money to provide all those things to other neighbors?

Christ illustrated what he meant by way of the parable of the good Samaritan...

Just to put this into today’s language you could substitute Arabs for the Israelites and a Jew for the Samaritan and get a feel of what it’s saying.

The theme is repeated many times in scripture as some of the references above indicate.

This is why we can’t earn our way to heaven, unless we are perfect. Unlike other religions, the Judeo-Christian God, doesn’t call us to “do no harm” or “Do more good than evil”.

God calls us to an active love towards God and others. There is no good that we can do to make up for sin, because if we know that it is good, then it is only what we should have done anyway.

God also calls us repeatedly to “Be holy for I am Holy” and to “Be perfect for I am perfect”.

The only way to be perfect is to either NEVER sin, and scripture says all have except Jesus, or to be forgiven. That’s why Jesus’s paying for our sin through His substitutionary sacrifice is critical. And it’s why scripture says nobody comes to the Father except through Jesus.

“No, that was the quote earlier in the speech. I am looking for the one at the end which had the words “word” and “dear” and did not show up when searching various versions of the Bible.”

Just give us the entire quote so we can find it for you then. I only see the one quote listed in the cited article.

By the way, this is a great site to look up a Biblical quote in many different translations: biblegateway.com

Proverbs 6:6-8 is one of my favorites. I can quote it from memory. I'll bet ObaMao would not even recognize it as scripture if he heard it.

Nor would he care because he is confident the grasshoppers can outvote the ants.

Biblegateway is awesome.
I use google to search it, though. Their search engine isn’t very good.

OK so if you love your neighbor as your self then they must also work as you have to earn there bread.
It also say in Bible ...."neither shall you work neither shall you eat".
And that does to me mean all who are able to work needs to earn there bread...and does not mean those who are unable to work. It mean to me and most...help those who are sick and unable to work but not the ones tooooooooooooooo lazy to work. Never have I heard any one say if someone is sick and can't work they do not need help.
It like raising children you teach them to earn at young age....something missing this day & age. For that parents are to blame.
For many they use use Matthew 22:39 to make us feel guilty and it way past getting very old.
