Senator questions firing of 3 inspectors general
Chicago Trib ^ | 6/18/09 | Tom Hamburger

WASHINGTON - -- He was appointed with fanfare as the public watchdog over the government's multi-billion dollar bailout of the nation's financial system. But now Neil Barofsky is embroiled in a dispute with the Obama administration that delayed one recent inquiry and sparked questions about his ability to freely investigate.

The disagreement stems from a claim by the Treasury Department that Barofsky is not entirely independent of the agency he is assigned to examine ¿ a claim that has prompted a stern letter from a Republican senator warning that agency officials are encroaching on the integrity of an office created to protect taxpayers.

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, sent the letter Wednesday to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner demanding information about a "dispute over certain Treasury documents" that he said were being "withheld" from Barofsky's office on a "specious claim of attorney-client privilege."

A White House spokesman declined to comment, referring questions to the Treasury Department. Treasury spokesman Andrew Williams said late Wednesday that the agency would read Grassley's letter and respond to the senator before any public comment.

More malfeasance from the 'most transparent' administration in history. Transparent stalinists, that is.

Another IG with reason to sue NObama?

I am desperately hoping that Walpin sues ‘The One’ over his firing, and the first question that the plaintiff’s attorney asks is along the lines of ‘Prove that you have the authority to fire any IG”...which would be a direct attack on the birth certificate issue of NObama.

IF there is any legal fund being established for Walpin, please let me know thru private messaging.

I think Grassley is on to something here, something that the MSM can not ignore.

It would help, IMHO, if some “back bench-er” in the House, would actually draw up “articles of impeachment” and make the case that Obama broke the law on these issues.

I am not under any delusion that full blown impeachment would go anywhere, at this time -— but Democrats almost always have impeachment bills filed against any Republican President, 6 months into office, don't they?

And, the impeachment bill itself would get some media coverage.

You may be optimistic. The media will ignore whatever it wants no matter how obvious, and if it does cover it, there is a very high chance it will be spun heavily to the point Obama seems like a hero for firing the guy.

Walpin is really, really pi**ed. I'd also say he's scared and that's why the public appearances. I would guess he has been threatened....

Obama just goes to his cave....until they get the monitor "set up"....

I find Obama terribly disrespectful to "old folks" in particular and women....Like Hillary and Sarah Palin. I also watch him constantly walk ahead of or ignore Michelle.

I believe the president, or the guy illegally holding that title, can fire the IGs as they serve at his pleasure as do the other employees of the executive branch. The law requires the President to notify congress and give the fired IG 30 days. The ball goes into Congress court at the time the reason for the discharge is sent and the Congress can look into the rationale behind the removal BUT I do not think they have the power to order a reinstatement. If the President is found to have removed the IG to stop him from uncovering a waste fraud or abuse situation that may constitute grounds for an impeachment but the removal still would stand. All this IMO of course. What is the possibility this would get to the impeachment level with this democrap house? About as much as my becoming a democrat. FWIW on Beck’s show yesterday, even the IG said he did not expect to win his fight.

Perhaps, but I am still sure this is worth the fight.

Look at the ratings for the MSM compared to FOX!

Sure, FOX is not at all perfect, but I think they keep their lefties on board simply so they can say that they are “fair and balanced” when Obama tries to bring back the “fairness doctrine”.

My point is that the MSM is bleeding, viewership is down, circulation is down.

This was a CHICAGO newspaper that broke this story, for Heaven's sake!

Don't give up! The people will relish a chance to throw eggs as Obama’s halo, and the MSM is desperate to stay in business.

Walking in front of their spouses is common in the Muslim and the Hindu world, I believe.

It looks profoundly disrespectful and rude, to us in the West, doesn't it?

Between the firings, the high unemployment rate, the huge deficits, and BHO’s weakness on Iran, there would appear to be sufficient material to mount an information campaign against this administration. My question is: where is the RNC?

Actually, Obama uses Michelle as window dressing, when it suits him.
I think it is an issue.

I also watch him constantly walk ahead of or ignore Michelle.

That could be a security thing. My folks had a policy of never boarding a plane together, so I wouldn't be an orphan.

Besides, Mrs. O says Mr. O stinks.

It is a “target rich environment” (I think that is Marine Corp Chesty Pullers term for being surrounded!)

We can shoot in any direction, and hit the enemy!

The problem is deciding where to concentrate our fire.
