On Monday night's "Late Show" host David Letterman re-addressed his comments about Gov. Sarah Palin and her teenage daughter. Letterman made a more serious apology than his response last week. "I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the governor, and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani," Letterman said.

Nothing said it was without consent. And rape resulting in pregnancy is not usually referred to as being knocked up. Ravished. Raped. Attacked. Not knocked up.
To me, it sounded about as sincere as the Dixie Chicks attempt at an apology way back when. If I recall right, once the Dixie Chicks figured out that people weren't gullible enough to buy it, they basically came out and said they actually weren't the least bit sorry they said what they said, and in fact were sorry they apologized for it.
If it was about an 18 year old, she is of age. It wouldnt have been rape.
I would be beyond outraged if this was said about my daughter by a public figure, a father?! He should have known better, but he simply said we misunderstood his intent, but never really defined what exactly that was...to attack conservatives.
So now he says he’s sorry, but we did misunderstand (which sorta means he did nothing wrong) and he get’s a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract extension so he can continue to attack conservatives. Sad. Just Sad.
The words and general tone sounded okay. Was it an act? Sure. Would he have done it otherwise? Nope. He’s a sexist perverted pig. Of course. But it is all we’re gonna get from him. He should apologize for the nasty comments regarding a lady like Sarah, but then they might make us have to apologize for some of the gross things we have said about their Wimun. Both sides go over the line when it comes to the public figures. Where people get angry though is if you go after the private figures, particularly children. They should be off limits if they are minors and truly private.
I just don’t understand how a father could be so mean to a kid? I have kids and they would be absolutely devastated. Yeah, it absolutely did not wash! But whether 14 or 18 it was just deplorable & I hope others see it
I don’t think you would use the term knocked up regarding rape. I interpreted it that -if, and it is a big if, it was Bristol, that he was saying she was an out of control SL-T who was getting herself impregnated by any guy that moved. A-Rod just happens to be known as a bit of a promiscuous guy himself. It was a sexist, classless, stupid, mean-spirited joke that is typical of the disdain they feel for us.
As for the girls, after the election, they are probably a little tougher and will get through this fine. As for Letterman, he is pathetic. And, I doubt he will go after Sarah much in the future.
His audience won’t sadly. They laughed at the joke.
Hey my fellow good American’s we have alot more important crap to worry about. He said he was sorry, now let’s worry about this crazy bastard over in North Korea and the thugs in Iran and are socialist President.Lets not boast this guy’s ratings anymore than we have.It is over,Let Conan O’Brian take over.
He should just put his shovel down and go home, for ever.
Well, that could be even worse in some respects. I hope the girls are tougher, but I have older children who would be rattled by less. I am just not that ready to forgive. Talk is cheap. He apologized, but I don’t think he was sorry for saying it. I think he was sorry for the hassle and potential money loss to him.
I would have liked him to actually back up his talk with ACTIONS. Perhaps a vow that in future, ALL CHILDREN of politicians or public figures regardless of political affiliation and/or age (under 21?!) will be off limits. Period.
Didn’t see it, so I still hope he gets
The point is that Letterman will continue to be on the air and will not lose significant viewership. Instead, he will most likely see a boost in his ratings over the next few weeks.
For Letterman to call Bristol a sl*t, is the pot calling the kettle black!
When Letterman first tried to “explain” his joke was supposed to be about Bristol and not Willow. I sent a new round of e-mails to the CBS executives.
I asked them: when Letterman “knocked up” his mistress, did he use her in sexual jokes because she got pregnant?
Did he ridicule his knocked up girlfriend?
Did he suggest A-Rod was involved?
Did he imply an Eliot Spitzer and prostitution connection?
NO?!
Well, in defense of Bristol, she was a high school kid who got caught up in something thousands of kids her age get caught up in every day and she is now dealing with the outcome.
However, Letterman was a 50-something, gray-haired,
has-been comedian who couldn’t keep his pants on.
Who is the least responsible of the two? I would suggest Letterman!
Once again, I asked the executives, why Letterman was attacking Palin’s 18-year-old. It must be for some other reason.
I told them it is because both CBS and Letterman detest Palin. Because of this hate they thought they could get by with this latest attack against her and her family. I also told them that CBS and Letterman were both culpable and both should issue apologies to the Palins.
The problem with Letterman’s lame “apology” is he didn’t mean it. He didn’t expect the furor that developed over Willow and/or Bristol, so now he is trying to save his job.
He has already lost one sponsor.
Piss off Letterman.
Your “jokes” aren’t funny
And your apologies aren’t credible.
Stick a fork in him, he’s done...
Did he lose a broadcast sponsor or a website sponsor?
There is a big difference.
He beat around the bush for a while, but finally apologized and said he would do better.
It was obvious he had been taken to the woodshed. If Mark Shields and NOW weigh in against you, it isn't good.
His arrogance was gone. The Palins are gracious people. We should be too.
Everyone in the media and in government play their "very important" role in shaping public opinion and policy. I say go after everyone under the whole corrupt circus tent (the pirates ship, the mobsters den, the psycho perverts hideout...whatever you call it.)
Did you see mister "culture warrior" apologize for Letterman? Some culture he wants us in. He's a right wing sheep herder...and a fake. He's there to look like he stands for values but he always poo poos any attempts by anyone to stand up for them.
Marked to watch later
It is hard to see how she could have played this more perfectly. The predictions of her electoral doom are quite premature.
