Former Virginia Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen tells Newsmax that America is at a "crossroads" regarding energy policy and the government is the biggest impediment to energy independence.
Allen also said that implementing the cap and trade plan to reduce carbon emissions would be equivalent to "economic unilateral disarmament" by the United States.
Allen is the founder of the American Energy Freedom Center, which promotes increases in domestic coal, oil, and natural gas production. Newsmax.TV's Kathleen Walter asked him about that effort.
"What we want to do is educate and inform people," Allen said.
"I have a lot of faith in the American people if they know the facts about the resources we have under our water and under our land, including Indian lands, and realize that the impediment has been from the government that doesn't let us get after it.
"For example, most people probably know that America has abundant coal. We're the Saudi Arabia of the world when it comes to coal. It can be used for efficient and affordable electricity generation, but it also means a lot of jobs.
"There are some great initiatives that are coming not out of Washington but out of the states.
"We also need to empower people in the states, if they so desire, to explore for oil and natural gas off their coasts.
"Virginia's been trying to get out from under the federal moratorium for five years. We'd like to be able to explore for natural gas and share the revenues with the state. We could use that for building roads and transportation infrastructure. If Virginia were able to do it, I guarantee the Carolinas and Georgia would say, Let's do the same thing in our states.

11/2010 & 11/2012 won't come soon enough for me. I only hope and pray that we still have a country left to vote in.
Semper Fi, Kelly
Who was president five years ago?
Hear! Hear! Couldn’t agree more.
The 0bamunists are destroying over 200 years of freedom and trampling the Constitution in the process. The anointed one’s march to marxism proceeds unimpeded, aided by a complicit media and millions of sheeple waiting on him to make their rent/mortgage payments, buy their gasoline and provide them their food.
It’s time to take back the country. I don’t think we can wait for 2012...
Couldn’t agree with you more. It’s the environmentalists that have put us in this spot, and guess what? They’re all democrats! The big question is: are the American people smart enough to see this? Or are we so dumbed down and dependant to see?
We need to dump Cap and trade as China and other countries won’t follow.
Americans need to worry about today and moving forward pass to get through this Obama Depression.
We need to get back to Drill Here and drill now for American freedom!
America has lost its ability to be a leader in the world under Obama and the current congress.
Obama and gang see that as not fair to the rest of the world thus are dragging us down instead of building up the rest.
The big question I have, and I mean getting down to the nitty gritty, who is behind the idea of us not drilling our own oil? I’m not talking about the nutty environmentalist. Someone is stopping us from producing our own oil. Who and why? It’s got to be tied to a name or names. The oil here, belongs to the American people, not the politicians.
George Allen ping.
sigh...
I'e been in the O&G bidness for over 30 years and it astounds no end to listen to the ignorance, lies and damned lies being spouted by the minute by the RATs and their greenie lap dogs.
You may have put your finger on it. Maybe the goal of the socialists is to create an energy crisis and then nationalize all energy supplies so that the evil energy companies can’t make any profits.
Energy Independence, add high tax rates and too many business regulations to that ‘Key to Economic Recovery’
Thanks Democrats, there will be little to zero Economic Recovery
The policies of sun & wind lollipops and unicorns defecating mega-wattage for free
.
well stated
I agree with your general sentiment. However, be careful how you phrase things. The oil ought to belong to whoever can get it out of the ground most efficiently at lowest cost. Belonging ‘to the people’ can easily lead to nationalization and I don’t think that is best for our country.
The free markets have been hampered at every turn by the government, the environmentalists, anyone who profits by the US being energy dependent. The ones who ultimately pay are us and our children.
Every single policy he is implementing will only worsen and deepen the economic downturn. Read "The Forgotten Man" - it's the 1930's all over again.
I wonder what lawsuit will be our Schecter?
I should have clarified. I agree it should go to the companies that pay to get it out of the ground.....not nationalization.
Also auto independence plus electronics, clothing, and UN enforcer.
No problem.
I’m just very conscious of using the phrase “belongs to the people”. That’s BO’s excuse for everything he’s doing. No matter that it is contrary to every Founding Principle we have. He’s just ramming things through ‘for the people.’
He is also ramming things through with amazing speed. I believe this is being done so the people of the country don’t have time to react. He needs to be slowed down. You know.....there are reasons why elders in churches are “elders”. They take their time to change things. They think about change and how it will effect the future.
Former governor, senator, large swing Eastern state between the North and the South, trumpeting the economic importance of energy independence. Whaddaya think, good ticket-balancing veep material for Palin?
Capitalism and free market reforms on all of the issues and to the best of human abilities is the key to economic recovery!
