American Mensa is distraught to hear of the violent events at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, June 10. Our thoughts are with the victims and the family and friends of Stephen Tyrone Johns, the security guard who was killed in the attack.
The accused shooter in this event, James Von Brunn, is a former member of American Mensa. Mr. Von Brunn was a member more than 20 years ago and his membership tenure lasted less than a year.
Mensa has more than 57,000 members across the United States and more than 110,000 members worldwide. Our members include people from all races, religions and walks of life. The organization thrives on the diversity of its members and the atmosphere of open-mindedness evident at Mensa events.
Mensa seems to have a 9-11 special interest group.

Von Brunn did not need to be a member of Mensa in order to access Mensa’s 9-11 special interest group

Because the only thing Mensans have in common is the IQ requirement, you can meet literally any type of person in the organization. Winston Churchill could have been a Mensan, and so could the Unabomber.
Some of the dumbest people I’ve ever met have been Mensans. (Sorry, Mensans. It’s true.)
As a Mensan I would say that having a high IQ does not indicate good judgment or common sense.
True. You can meet any type of person with an IQ in the top 2%.
Book smarts, no common sense.
Yep, I tried it for a few years too... had some fun at some gatherings (tons of beer), but was amazed at how many misfits were there.
That’s a fact. I attended one meeting years ago, decided I didn’t want to be associated with a bunch of stupid high IQ folks.
Mensa ping.
So how many of us Mensans are also freepers?
I’m a member for 30 years. I’ve found that mPhasis tilts left.
Yep, I was a member once too. Found it exactly as you did, some nice people (made a couple of good friends) but lots of strange ones and I didn’t reup.
I am as well...
Your name is really pretentious and hurts my feelings.
I guess it achieved its desired purpose then?
As a Mensan, I would too.
And as a graduate of more than 15 years of university-level study with a doctorate degree, I'd say that being a university professor does not indicate good judgment, common sense, or intelligence. (Apparently, many people--notably the university professors themselves--seem to think that it does.)
I don't think that holds true, Kalee, even as a rule of thumb. Some people have both. And infuriating and unjust though it is, there are some people who are book smart, have common sense--and are happy, rich, beautiful--and, most infuriating of all!--even NICE!
I too have been there done that. The thing that impacted me the most was that almost all Mensans are liberal.
I also noted that Mensa has around 50 percent membership among qualified individuals.
In my experience in two local Mensa groups, the Liberal members seems to be there to preen and show off their superior intellect.
Conservatives seldom stay in Mensa because Conservatives have usually got better things to do than exercise intellectual arrogance.
I am glad I joined and am now glad I am out of it.
