"As I've often said, in the short term, as we transition to renewable energy," President Obama stated in April, "we can and should increase our domestic production of oil and natural gas... . We still need more oil, we still need more gas. If we've got some here in the United States that we can use, we should find it and do so in an environmentally sustainable way."
Does anyone believe Obama was serious about this? Given his practice of misdirection--saying one thing, doing another--no one should have. Now, nearly five months into the Obama presidency, it's clear he didn't mean a word of it. His administration is impeding, not promoting, increased production of oil and gas, as it is of coal and nuclear power.
This is a crazy policy. It's likely to drive up gasoline and electricity prices while making America more dependent than ever on foreign oil--three bad trends. Energy independence becomes still another of Obama's stated policies being championed in words but not deeds.
Higher prices on oil and gas may make wind and solar power, the renewable sources of energy the Obama administration is promoting, more competitive, but only slightly. They would still be heavily reliant on large subsidies from the federal government, face severe technical problems, and produce energy only intermittently.
At the moment, demand for oil and gas is down and so is our capacity to produce them. As the economy improves, demand is bound to rise quickly. But capacity can be increased only gradually, and that's if more production is being encouraged rather than prevented.
To think that wind and solar or other alternative fuels can fill the energy gap requires a belief in what Adriel Bettelheim of Congressional Quarterly has called the "Tinkerbell effect," as in Peter Pan.

Iran has a right to nuclear power while America is supposed to put up windmills.
Exactly,,,,,,do as I say, not as I do........YOU must not keep your heat on 72, YOU must not travel to vegas in your private jet, YOU must sacrifice, I on the other hand can keep my WH office at 72 or above, I can fly all over creation , I do not need to sacrifice because I AM THE ONE.
Why, such a policy would be positively quixotic.
America Quixote
A friend of mine was recently in DC as part of an IPAMs (Independent Petroleum Association of America),lobbying group trying to reverse some of the idiocy coming from this admin's energy policies. They were told by a Senator who did not get named, that, I quote "We're gonna take you boys down a notch or two, because this president thinks you make too much money."
"Never let a crisis go to waste, particularly one we helped generate."
This has been an issue ripe for exploitation by the Republicans since the high gas prices a couple years ago.
But then, we’re talking about Republicans.
I thought this article was about Obama, not Barney Frank.
Surprise, surprise, surprise.
You're thinking a wee bit too small. He's going to nationalize them.
Sounds to me like your industry and the rest of civilized America is really gettin screwed without any hint of lovin!!!
Excuse me, but I think you've lost track of time... That was less than a year ago if I'm not mistaken!!!
I just timed my cross country trip with my gas-hog R.V. to catch the absolute "valley" in the price of gasoline! When I left CA in late April it was right about where it is now at around $2.75/gal. So I've been watchin this "thing" really, really closely!!!
More like anal rape. Guess the country should have listened to Larry Sinclair. Next we'll be hearin' the obamination stealin' a line from Hillary's ex.
Put some ice on it America
Ouch!!! Perish the thought just like Soddom perished!!!
Even better. McCain had a campaign issue: The Democrats are driving up gas prices by preventing us from using our own oil.
Stupid Republicans.
He "does nothing," because he thinks it is enough merely to say grand things. It's worked great for him up to now, because he's never had to back up his words with actions.
Now he's either going to have to learn to act -- a fearful thing for us, since the guy has no clue as to practical consequences; or he's going to become a joke -- the classic windbag (I think of Foghorn Leghorn...).
Either way it's bad news for us, as there are bad guys out there who have a true sense of what it means to plan and act.
I think you give him far too much credit for his abilities to make things happen.
The evidence presented in this article does much more to paint Obama as an idealist -- and a naive, sophomoric one, at that. He says what he thinks he has to, to make some particular group happy. He means none of it, and that doesn't bother him a bit. To Obama the narcissist, it's all about making people like him.
Unfortunately for him, and even more unfortunately for us, Obama can't isolate his audiences as he did before; nor can the MSM shield him as they did during the campaign. Obama's always saying something, and everybody has a chance to hear it.
What it will mean, I think, is that because Obama has taken so many different positions on so many different issues, he's going to either become completely ineffective, or he's going to begin veering wildly.
In either case, I think we're going to start seeing Obama showing his anger in public, and he's going to get himself in trouble by it.
Bad guys are watching, though ... and there's nothing bad guys like better than a fool with a big mouth.
The clinical psychopathology of Obama is best summarized as one of malicious seductive dishonesty, disguising morbid hatred of the United States, while ceaselessly planning to destroy this nation.
Very good incite into the coming collapse of the obamination mystique.
As events unravel (economy, dangerous world), he will become increasingly frustrated and unable to spin out of the mess. Good for us and very, very bad for us at the same time.
