the people of nj are just stupid...let them wallow in their own stupidity...

What a nonsensical post. The people of NJ are NOT stupid. Where are YOU from? How SMART are you? Not everyone in NJ voted the way you think they did. Stop grouping people you know nothing about.

I do not mind it if Cristie is a campaign supporter of Lonergan, I just don’t want him running the show. I was in NJ when the GOP establishment smeared the conservative leaders of the state as ‘Rat Finks’. I was in the state when the GOP establishment caused the death of John Spoltore (my old boss), the last conservative GOP state Chairman. In New Jersey the Democrats are always crooks and the state GOP establishment is the enemy.

On my earlier lists I left out Dewey over Taft in 1948 AND over Taft-supported John Bricker in 1944. I remember Everett Dirksen’s great speech in 1952, pointing at Dewey, clenching his fist and saying ‘We followed you before. And you took us down the road to defeat’.

I know. I’m just saying none of our states are an island unto themselves. A lot of people are concerned about what goes on in all of them and how it effects us nationally. Some because they want to see Conservatives return to power, and some, like that certain other FReeper, who prefer the left continue to take the GOP on a course to extinction (like Massachusetts).

Paul Laxalt. The Nevada version of Reagan, with both Gubernatorial and Senatorial experience. Reagan didn’t pick him because he thought having two westerners on the ticket wouldn’t work.

I understand completely -- I'm one of those people. It's just that I notice some out-of-staters (not you, but you-know-who) only seem to chime in when they've got something pejorative to write.

Conservatives in NJ and California share something... we're both harshly oppressed minorities. And the people who are supposed to be "on our side" usually turn out to be our worst enemies.

Living under the conditions we have endured for years, I dare say that NJ conservatives are often much MORE conservative than those in states like Wyoming or Texas or Montana. (No disrespect intended toward our western and southern conservative brethren.) When one has to fight every day to safeguard his principles, he tends to be much more vigilant about those principles.

And what was your last great success? You and the rest of you holier than though Reagan wannabes. What was the last election you won? 1994?

Your idiotic statement here has made the conservatives point. The last time we REAllY won an election was when we ran conservatives. Bush Sr. got in on Regans coattails then lost the next election to BJC because of his "read my lips" and a few other gaffs he made that caused many people to vote for Big Ears Perot. Why do you think they vote for Perot? Because many perceived him to be more conservative than Bush. They wanted something besides a belt way politician and it got them BJC. The RINOs did that. Had they run a real conservative instead of Bush sr. in his first election the conservative would have won two terms. We wouldn't be saddled with Bozo now if there had been a real conservative running instead of McCain and Bush Jr. was a RINO also and barely won both times.

Tell me, RINO lover, when was the last time RINOs won an election? It wasn't in 2006 and sure as hell wasn't in 2008 but you are still pushing the same old, same old for the next election hoping for another defeat.

Dastardly RINO, Tom Wilson, chair of the NJ GOP, must go if we have any chance of defeating the corrupt RATS. I voted for Lonegan but I’m not a Christie hater. But when he says he’s not a Christie Whitman Republican, he better back that up with actions.

Bad as the Bush VP choice was in 1980, Reagan’s first choice was worse. There were negotiations with former President Ford for him to be a sort of super Vice President, with major control over foreign policy and national security. This was going on during the national convention, scary days. Ford ended up wanting too much, so they turned to his man Bush, who had run second during the primaries.

I think another reason why Laxalt wasn’t chosen was because he was up for reelection in 1980, and the GOP was aggressively challenging as many Senate seats as possible to claim a majority they hadn’t won in 28 years. As it was, when Laxalt retired in ‘86 (far too early), that scumbag Harry Reid (whom Laxalt beat as long ago as 1974 when it was an open Dem seat, one of the few the GOP won) took his seat.

Reagan tried to unite the wings earlier. He picked PA liberal Republican Sen. Dick Schweiker as his running mate in ‘76, to the horror of Conservatives. Schweiker, however, actually moved rightward after his affiliation with Reagan. He retired in 1980 to get a Cabinet post, but was replaced by another infamous cretin... Arlen Specter (who beat the Conservative in the primary by a narrow plurality... and unfortunately, there was no runoff). And he almost lost the seat despite the Reagan landslide, barely beating the Dem, former Pittsburgh Mayor Peter Flaherty, 50-48%.

I agree...and I like lonegan and came close to voting for him...but went christie in the end...either way, and I didn’t decide until I was in the voting booth...my feelings were that I will support whoever wins with gusto...because that is what we should do...seems the lonegan folks here are more likely to punish all of nj if their guy doesn’t win...
