I'm slightly surprised that the White House press office gave out this image, from her 1976 Princeton yearbook, in which she quotes Norman Thomas.
Norman Thomas was, of course, the leading American Socialist politician of the 20th century. Perhaps they figured it would come out eventually so they wanted to be able to say, "That's old news. We thought it was so inconsequential, we mentioned it ourselves." Or perhaps they felt that substantively didn't matter; Norman Thomas was a pretty mainstream and respected figure, as socialists went. And his quote is universal. Or perhaps they didn't notice.

I’ve always thought Orwell’s idealism changed a lot after his experience in the Spanish civil war...his excellent book, “Homage to Catalonia” pretty much expresses his view of war and honed his hatred for communism. I read it quite awhile ago, but as I recall he spent much of the book describing the political bent of the many, many, ideologies battling in that absurd war.
Spoken like the progressive kool aid drinker who just knows that the average reader has never read the older and wiser George Orwell.

I understand what you're saying, but look at it another way: I'm making this up, but how's this for a quote for a yearbook --
"There's nothing I like better than helping people cool off on a hot summer's day!" -- Sheriff "Bull" Connors.
That's an innocuous quote, but if you know that Connors was famous for using firehoses against civil rights marchers, then the quote becomes less savory.
I guantee you that no one whose yearbook entry quotes David Duke or Bull Connors will ever get on the Supreme Court. Doesn't matter what the quote says.

My gadar was set off yesterday. It was as strong as when I saw Adam Lambert on the first couple of episodes of Idol this year. The whole day, I’m thinking no mention of family, husband, kids. Kind of like when reports of a crime don’t mention the color of an assailant, the lack of words on the subject had me thinking she likes carpet.
It was the 70s, everybody was ugly in the 70s.

All I read into that particular quote was typical thing a college kid might say.
However I am sure she is extremely radical. Obama would not have made the pick if not.
She seems to not understand what the 2nd amendment is about for starters.
But again this is what the election was about; I assumed everyone expected we would get this with Obama winning.
She married Kevin Noonan in 1976. She divorced in 1983. No kids.
Maybe Perez Hilton will get a chance to ask her about her views on homosexual marriage?
I hear you. It's always said that guys back then went to demonstrations and peace rallies for the sole reason to pick up chicks. I could never understand their motivation because chicks back then were positively revolting and looked both dirty and diseased.

“Baby I’ll be there to share the land that they’ll be giving away when we all live together”. Or “tune in, turn on, and don’t promote Whitey”.
