D-Day snub to Queen: Palace fury as Sarkozy refuses to invite royals to 65th Anniversary
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 27th May 2009 | Matthew Hickley and Rebecca English

Buckingham Palace voiced anger last night after the French snubbed the Queen over next week's D-Day commemorations.

Aides said senior royals had repeatedly made clear their eagerness to support the historic 65th anniversary events in Normandy.

But last night French officials crushed any remaining hopes, admitting they had never had any plans to invite members of the British Royal Family.

They said President Nicolas Sarkozy was focused on the 'main event' of hosting U.S. President Barack Obama.

There was also anger at the British Government for failing to secure a Royal invitation from their French counterparts. Protocol means they cannot simply invite themselves.

The failure to invite the Queen - who is head of state of both Britain and Canada - will be seen as an insult to the memory of the 17,556 British and 5,316 Canadian troops who died to free France and are buried there.

Sarko wants to have Obama all to himself that day and doesn't want to be irritated by inconvenient Brits and Canucks.

This is a disgrace to every British veteran, The Queen happens to be a veteran.

Shame on France, again.

The failure to invite the Queen ... will be seen as an insult

It's not "seen" as an insult; it is an insult.

Someone should inquire of Mssr. Sarkozy if the words "Gold", "Juno" and "Sword", taken all together, mean anything to him.

As Her Majesty is also a war veteran herself, this must be galling.

The British Government failed to arrange an invitation. What else do you expect from the gaffe-prone, post-Blair Labourites?

I seem to recall reading that there were all of about 600 of the Free French Army in London during the war; kind of dwarfed by the tens of thousands of Brits who crossed the Channel on June 6, 1944, isn’t it?

So what if there are no Brits there. There won’t be any Americans there, either.

The Queen happens to be a veteran.

Indeed she is. The father of my best friend in high school met then Princess Elizabeth as she serviced an Army vehicle that he crewed.

It certainly is. And for the Britain and Canada it was the second time across the channel, with the disastrous raid on Dieppe on 19 August 1942.

At Dieppe the Allies learned many of the lessons necessary for D-Day to be successful, but only after incurring a cost of 3,623 killed, captured or wounded.

No shortage of British and Canadian blood shed on Sarkozy’s country. It’s shameful that he has snubbed our Queen in this manner.

GAG. A scam artist interloper is the "main event." A scam artist interloper who has already shown disrespect on multiple occasions towards the UK in his 130 or so days of wonder.
