California First Lady Starting Edible Garden At Capitol

Sacramento, CA (AHN) - California first lady Maria Shriver is following U.S. first lady Michelle Obama, who gave the White House a vegetable garden, by planting one at her state's Capitol.

Shriver will plant the first edible garden on the grounds of the Capitol Thursday, her office said in a news release.

Shriver has promoted the creation of gardens at schools across California as a way for students to learn. Since she began her work, the number of schools with gardens has doubled from 3,000 to 6,000.

"Over the years, I have seen how gardens have positively transformed students, schools and communities in California. Gardens are a wonderful resource, and I truly believe in the life lessons they teach and the lives they touch -- and that every school and community should have one," Shriver said in the statement. "What we're doing in California goes beyond symbolism, we are truly creating a comprehensive environment for learning all around this garden."

Shriver hopes "WE Garden in Capitol Park" will educate and inspire Californians about nutrition, healthy living, agriculture, science, history and service.

Arnie makes a short cameo appearance in the new Terminator flick but its a computer generated edition. The acting quality has not suffered though.

Ouch. LOL

I admire her. She has used her own garden space as a photo op and has made a MINT off of it. I sell books and hers always sell. I’ve seen ‘behind the scenes’ and NONE of those gardens are actually ‘growing.’ They are all staged photo shoots, much like most gardening magazines you happen to read.

Nice work if you can get it! And living in CA helps a lot, LOL!

Her ‘The Complete Book of Edible Landscaping’ has become a classic and is hard to find; people won’t part with it.

I doubt that Maria putzed about anything other than a bottle of Cutty Sark...Kennedy’s are such jokes...

Hey Maria, what about the time last year when Ted Kennedy was dumping bilge water from his yacht in Hyanis Port. That was not very good for the environment.

This is from one or two years ago, and I don't remember what the occasion was.

Actually the kids are very goodlooking. I saw them on TV at someone’s funeral...can’t remember who.

We’ll see them soon again at Uncle Teddy’s funeral.

OOPS! I spoke too soon—that one was really cute when she was younger. Now she looks like Arnold.

Is “edible” the new “vegetable?”

Don't know, but it is the opposite of an "inedible vegetable garden"

(If such a thing exists - all veggies are wonderful. Dined on my first fiddlehead ferns this week - yum!!!)

It may be an edible garden on public property, but any of us should just try and get in to pick a head of lettuce or bunch of radishes.

What’s the latest on the green governor commuting back and forth between LA and Sacramento via private jet daily. Is this still happening? I understand it is on his own dime but it’s still putting a lot of CO2 up into the air. Why haven’t we heard more about the green governor and his gas guzzling commute?

Did she run this by the Coastal Commission before breaking ground. The capitol is close enough to a navigable water way to require review...

Starting a vegetable garden when it's almost summer? That's kind of late....

Plus, CA is in a drought. Agriculture consumes lots of water, and water rates are increasing. Maybe she should encourage people to convert lawns and gardens to desert landscaping, instead.

Is “edible” the new “vegetable?”

Sort of, but "edible" also comprises flowers and herbs.

I went back and visited my college recently. They started an "edible tour," with signs designating edible flowers, herbs, and vegetable plants tucked in planters along some pathways through campus.

This school previously already had many mature fruit trees and roses. They keep spending on the beautiful landscaping but, unfortunately, they're closing the school bookstore to save money.

A college bookstore that loses money. That doesn't sound good.

“Can’t wait to see what’s next.”

Pssstt...I heard that ‘Movie Star’ Alec Baldwin has started making his own soap! (There. That ought to tide you over, LOL!)

These people are clueless posers. From the White House on down!
