WASHINGTON President Obama told human rights advocates at the White House on Wednesday that he was mulling the need for a preventive detention system that would establish a legal basis for the United States to incarcerate terrorism suspects who are deemed a threat to national security but cannot be tried, two participants in the private session said.
The discussion, in a 90-minute meeting in the Cabinet Room that included Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and other top administration officials, came on the eve of a much-anticipated speech Mr. Obama is to give Thursday on a number of thorny national security matters, including his promise to close the detention center at the naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
Human rights advocates are growing deeply uneasy with Mr. Obamas stance on these issues, especially his recent move to block the release of photographs showing abuse of detainees, and his announcement that he is willing to try terrorism suspects in military commissions a concept he criticized bitterly as a presidential candidate.

“...we are talking about terrorists not U.S. citizens?”
The article does not have much detail in this area. it just says “terrorism suspects” without mentioning citizenship status. There is a hint later on of ‘not necessarily on the battlefield’.
Plenty of room for speculation, but the natural thought is “he MUST mean non-citizens because that’s the way we’ve always done it here”, but this man promised to change everything.
A year ago I never would have dreamed that the US Government would force their way into owning 50% of General Motors, 39% owned by the automakers unions, and a little more than 1% owned by stockholders...but that just happened.
There is nothing in the somewhat limited article restricting Obama’s Preventive Detentions to noncitizens.
The hypocrisy is utterly breathtaking.
bump for later reading
I guess I'll finally get to meet all you people in jail.
See ya' then!
Combine 0bamas Preventative Detention with his report on Right-Wing Terrorism and you start to get an idea of whats going on. No, 0bama isnt Hitler. History never repeats, it just rhymes.
The Lord does not abandon His children. His children run away from Him and end up with consequences.
This move is ZERO’s companion piece to a new gun law being considered in Congress, to deny citizens of their 2nd Amendment rights without due process. All that would be needed is for Attorney General, Eric “Der obersten Landesbehörde” Holder to “have a reasonable belief” that a person might use a gun in connection with terrorism. I alerted FR to this bill last week.
If HR 2159 is aligned with DHS’s report and lexicon about “domestic terrorists and right-wing extremists,” it would label everyday Americans as potential “threats,” and “HochRechtsanwalt” Holder would have the authority to arbitrarily deny them of their Constitutional right to own a gun.
Now, coupled with “Die neue Geistesblitz von Herr Obama,” in addition to banning guns to pro-lifers, gun-rights advocates, tax protesters, Constitutionalists, states’ rights advocates, animal rights activists, and a host of others already on the expansive DHS watch list for potential “terrorists,” Eric “Heinrich” Holder can also toss them into a “protective detention center,” or “Konzentrationslager.”
Suspend “Habeas corpus” my “gluteus maximus!”
Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., along with six cosponsors (both Dem’Rats and RINOs), has sponsored H.R. 2159, the “Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009,” a bill that only requires the potential firearm transferee to be “appropriately suspected” of preparing for a terrorist act and that the attorney general “has a reasonable belief” that the gun might be used in connection with terrorism.
More vans and SUVs have been used in connection with “government-labeled terrorism” than guns and more Americans have been killed by explosions than gunshots.
This bill would enable the AG to put all of the people who voted against Obama on no-gun lists, because according to the DHS, they're all potential terrorists.

The media? What about all the Republican Candidates? How many lost? How many needed to win? It wasn’t only the media. Actually, with no moral standards, the Constitution is of no consequence.
love babelfish!
Sure, like the people who lived next to Auschwitz.
And those who live in an urban area have not a clue what it is like to try and travel fairly long distances during a long snowy winter in a light compact vehicle compared to a van, SUV or truck. The sheer stupidity of some of these directives is absolutely amazing! Not everyone has public transit or even such a thing as a taxi available where they live and have to use a vehicle which will travel long distances through deep, drifting blowing snow where they may also encounter such as thing as a moose or deer. Sure would be handy to have a gun then. After all moose and deer don’t read those handy, dandy game crossing signs! (sarcasm intended)
An interesting quote from “Gulag Archipelago”:
“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say goodbye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling in terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand. The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst; the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!”
— Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago
Solzhenitsyn, in the chapter on arrests, discusses how arbritrary and random it became to be arrested. The councils were given quotas in the thousands to arrest (to make room for others who were being shifted into that region for the mass population shifts Stalin was implementing from one country to another). People turned on each other, turned each other in for nothing, for fear, for hoping to delay the day when they would be arrested. People were arrested not just for political or religious views, but for knowing, being related to or having any friendship or connection with someone who had been arrested, and later it became so random it was almost like a lottery. If this type of insanity ever gets started it would definitely be the Christians and conservatives that go first, but if leftists and liberals think they would be safe they are mistaken. This kind of evil grows and morphs like a cancer until the whole country is in bondage & fear, whether physically or not. I traveled in Eastern Europe and Russia in the mid 90’s, and it still had an opressive feeling of psychological and spirtitual darkness, cynicism and distrust, even quite a few years after the fall of communism.
Hey, where is the ACLU now? Hypocrites!
The 'who' is bad enough, but the basis for this decision is only codified in a vague policy statement written by a bureaucrat.
Without law, there is no rule of law.
When being a "threat" becomes contingent on arbitrary and capricous criteria, the rule of law is subverted.
But then, we battle against principalities and powers...
It isn't over 'till it's over, and it isn't over yet.
I don't know of many politicians, especially democrats, who have ANY belief, let alone a "reasonable" one.
I have this nagging thing going on in my head about these "camps." 0 spoke of a "program" to train young "volunteers" for "community service."
On his website, at first they said they would be sent to strategically located camps across the country for training. Then they changed camps to campuses.
NOW, he is insisting on bringing Gitmo terrorists to this country and has stressed the NEED for maximum security prisons to house them. In other words, POW camps. I am assuming these "prisoners" would include some not yet captured.(?) WHY is he so insistent on bringing those creatures here even after his own party said no way, man?
He wants the money to build these things, and he is still insisting Congress make this money available, but what IF he has no real intention of bringing them here at all? What IF he wants to build these things and it is an elaborate ruse to get these things built right under our noses, with our money, and the next thing we know, we're there?
Sorry. But it's late, and I am getting VERY paranoid about this crap.
Me, too, but there are those who are busy buying up ammo with their credit cards who are afraid of ending up on a "list" somewhere...
While I see your point, if they have ever filled out a form 4473, paid for ammo or accessories or a firearm with a credit card, they are already on the list.
Might as well sign large enough they don't need their spectacles.
I believe that a (Constitutional) Congressional Declaration of War would fall under "Due Process of Law".
