More stockpiling ammunition: Fear of potential Obama laws causing mass sales

Every day, Darren Newsom's three Bitterroot Valley Ammunition facilities crank out 300,000 rounds of ammunition.

It's not nearly enough.

“I'm going about 100,000 rounds in the wrong direction every day,” Newsom said. “We probably have about six months of back orders right now.”

Newsom has been in the ammunition manufacturing business for more than 20 years and he's never seen demand this high.

Fearful of the Obama administration's potential to tighten gun control laws, people from all over the country are stocking up on guns and ammunition.

“I went through the Clinton years and there was a bit of a scare then,” Newsom said. “This is like the Clinton years on steroids. On the day of the election, our phones started going nuts. It hasn't stopped since.”

As a master distributor for ATK - the world's largest ammunition business - Bitterroot Valley Ammunition supplies other ammunition manufacturers around the country with the components needed to make bullets.

“I get a million primers in every other day and most are shipped out the very next day,” he said. “I have 100 million primers on back order right now. We just can't get enough of them.”

At a recent gun show in Salt Lake City, Newsom sold somewhere between 300,000 and 400,000 rounds in the first two hours.

“It's just unreal,” he said. “Somewhere in lots of basements around the country, there are millions of rounds of ammunition being stored.”

Local businesses have felt the ammunition shortage.

At Bob Ward's in Hamilton, Mike Matteson said there has been quite a run on ammunition and reloading supplies like bullets and powder since the election.

“We are especially low right now with pistol ammunition,” Matteson said. “There are four or five calibers that we don't even have on our shelves.”

Just suspect this is the reason for the apparent lack of growth in these groups.

Actually the groups are saying that the membership in all 2A groups is way up, I'll have to dig around for some solid stats, Our state group has added over 1100 members in the last five months!

but there are a few who still believe they can stay "off-line" and incognito... I keep telling them that they are most likely on a "list" somewhere... You can't hide these days, so the best place is up front and surrounded by like minded people. :-)

Agreed. Now more than ever is the time to stand up and be counted.

Fifteen pounds. I have one of those cartridges, so I weighed it carefully and multiplied by 600. The rest fell out of the canoe. On a dark and stormy night. A long time ago. On a deep lake. That doesn't exist anymore.

Fixed it for you.

Sounds like a short story -- or maybe a novel.

If 75 million gun owners won’t join the NRA even when a first year membership is free, you’re fooling yourself if you think those gunowners will ever rise up to fight tyranny.

If those gunowners rise up to support tyranny then they will be on the receiving end of long distance .243 hollowpoints (or 30-06, or .308 or .223 or 7mm or 7.62 x whatever).

to be honest, my uncle is too stupid to understand that kind of humor.

If you met him, you’de see what I mean.

LOL. I have one like that - though he married into the family. He's an old Roosevelt worshipper, and once told me that on the way back from his stint in the Army, he tossed his .45 into the ocean. His son, my cousin, is so desperate for his father's approval that he has become a complete nut-roots wack-job, and is probably ticked off that Maobama hasn't already nationalized all U.S. industry and banned guns.

My favorite line of reasoning with all of these anti-gun morons is: "Have you EVER fired a gun?" The answer is (with the exception of Uncle Putz) always "no." Whereupon I ask them how they can presume to spout off on a matter of life and death without having any actual knowledge about the subject matter. I always invite them to come to the range, and the look I get is one of sheer horror, as if the gun would possess them and turn them into a gap-toothed, beer-swilling, cousin f'ing redneck member of the VRWC. I just laugh at them - and the contempt drives them berzerk.

Alas, we all have jackasses like that in our family - but you know the old saying: you can pick your friends but not your family.

Maybe some don’t want to be on yet another list (especially when Maobama someday directs Holder to declare the NRA a terrorist organization).

Maybe some are tired of receiving appeal after appeal for money to stave off some hyped-up disaster - only to have the NRA later compromise away yet another freedom in some legislative battle.

I belonged to the NRA for 18 years, and may do so again. But the NRA is not the end all and be all of pro-gun activism or of love for liberty.

“There are four or five calibers that we don't even have on our shelves.”

Let me guess:

.380
.223/7.62
5.56
.40S&W

Now, if someone could make an exploding round out of an .22LR, that might help.

Have you seen for how much anything that looks like an AR-15 is going?

Your gonna be hard pressed to find anything AR for less than $1,500.00.
I really want to buy an AR lower, but they just cost too much right now.

A month or so ago, Gander Mt. had two FN AR's (semi-auto .308) for about $1,600.00. I was tempted to get one. Told a friend of mine about it and he bought one the next day. (Now if he can only get some ammo.)

I think you can still get a Ruger Mini 14 or Mini 30 for $650 to $750.

I appreciate the link. I will let my buddies know that aren’t members yet. I might actually just pay for their annual dues because TANSTAAFL. NRA could use the money for the coming battles. I’ve got $200 left on my easy pay life and I joined GOA after the election. I’m also looking at the SAF.

"I used that up in about the first 20 minutes of contact"

And 200 dead VC, right? Or were you just spraying for affect because it made you feel better?

Never did get an accurate body count but most likely 4 -500. ;-)

The jungle is an interesting place to fight in. It seems like literally every plant or tree is shooting at you. The M-60 gunner would pick a spot and spray it and it it got quieter he moved on. While we were fairly good at ammo conservation I completely understand spray and pray in the jungle - simple suppression fire. i know guys from WW2 that said they did the same thing in France on the hedgerows. In Iraq different story; my sons who both spent lots of time there are still amazed at the terrorist need to spray and pray it just marks them for accurate return fire.

from 2001 through last year he spent the more and more infequent family gatherings ranting and raving about George W. Bush and how he he no longer had a spiritual connection to the USA.

He said he wanted to move to Mexico with his mexican wife because he no longer wanted to live here.

I smiled, looked at him, and said..BYE..

Sometimes I kill me I’m so funny..it must be said.

You can still get the entry level Bushmaster AR at our nearby Gander for $999 when you can find one.

I’m not advocating anything...I’m just suggesting people think about it before their body is found surrounded by full ammo cases and empty pill bottles.

Also, recall that medications expire, with effects changing over time. That must be considered.

If they’re medications you’re already taking, use the oldest first.

200 rounds in 20 minutes is only one round every six seconds, on average.

Hardly “spraying”.
