Mother, son flee in chemotherapy dispute

SLEEPY EYE, Minn., May 20 (UPI) -- An arrest warrant was issued for the mother of a Minnesota teen after the pair missed a court hearing on the son's fight against chemotherapy, police said.

Colleen Hauser and her son, Daniel, 13, have been missing from their Sleepy Eye, Minn., farm since Monday after they went to a medical appointment that indicated the son's cancer was worsening, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Wednesday.

Only the boy's father, Anthony Hauser, was in court Tuesday for the hearing called to review a court-ordered X-ray to assess whether the younger Hauser's Hodgkin's lymphoma was getting worse. The father said he didn't know the whereabouts of his wife or son.

Brown County, Minn., District Judge John Rodenberg ruled last week Daniel Hauser must receive chemotherapy even though the treatment goes against the family's spiritual beliefs and wishes. The Hausers belong to the Nemenhah, a quasi-American Indian group favoring natural remedies and opposes medicine that attacks or harms the body.

Nemenhah is affiliated with one of those reservation groups that claims it's part of the Native American religion. At the same time they all follow after the Book of Hagoth.

He's a fellow mentioned in the Book of Mormon.

Jesus is mentioned there too.

Technically you're correct, they're not your classical heathens, but their hankering is pre-Christian, in the least.

Nonsense, they get your tax dollars even if they don't have any work to do.

Now that we've established that it's peyote at the core of the issue, I have to ask ~ do you use peyote?

If the kid had a broken leg with bones hanging out and was screaming in pain,,it would be clearer because of the nature of what you see.

Can’t see the lymphoma so it just looks murkier I guess.

“if the kid doesn’t want it, don’t give it to him”,,you believe this.

He is a kid,,they don’t want to go to school, brush their teeth, take showers, do homework, go to bed on time,,,and so on.

What he wants is only a small picture of the decision here.

You don’t let a kid die because he is a stupid kid with stupid parents.

Not a hypothetical ~ several years back a young couple who'd become affiliated with the Apostolic Charismatic Church of the First Born (I believe with a group in Oregon), decided their kid was going to be a new messiah if they fed him only watermelon and lettuce.

Their families, hardcore LDS'ers in SLC, went to the authorities and a massive manhunt ensued.

The baby was retrieved and I presume put on a normal diet.

We are discussing the same "source of discomfort" ~ namely, the COTFB and its offshoots among Western Indian tribes (Church of ODO, dedicated to peyote use, had as its symbol a reindeer leaping over a peyote cactus bud ~ don't get closer'n that).

Many of these groups are dangerous.

There’s no First Amendment issue involved in this.

They are affiliated with a reservation group. Start your search for these groups by looking for “peyote” ~ quite enlightening.

Do you freely use peyote? Have your teeth fallen out?

If not, you don't know the issues here.

It is not worshipping science to look at the information given about treatment and make a decision.

To turn this crazy mother who is assisting her son in an unnecessary death into some kind of freedom love is stretching things so far it is astonishing.

You don’t love freedom, you worship ignorance and stupidity and a kid is going to die here while you cheer the mom on.

I believe that the parents can raise their child any way they want right up until society deems it abuse.

I don't disagree in the specifics of this case, but I would also say that this statement, at face value, means that the parent have zero right to raise their child as they see fit. Society's deeming a particular act as abuse is an unsafe standard. I have personally argued long and hard on other forums with people who call homeschooling abusive. If 51% of the voters in a referendum decided they agreed with this viewpoint, it would rise to the level of a societal decision - which means homeschooling would be deemed an abuse, and would hence be illegal and punishable.

Like I stated, the facts in this case as I have seen them appear to support the statement you used. But it is far too broad a statement to use generically, IMO.

Who's blaming God? The kid doesn't want the treatment, period.

According to the "Great Zero" himself, a child shouldn't have the freedom of choice to live or die until the age of 5 when they can make cognitive decisions.

This kid is 13 years old. You would think the pro abortion sect would be all over this to allow this kid to just die because of his choice. Granted the mother might be a whack job but she apparently is the only one supporting this kids decision.

since the child in question has stated that he intends to fight like hell to prevent anything from being done to him, how exactly are you going to accomphish this? I can tell you from personal experience he will need a port implanted in his chest, which will tie into the artery in his neck. then they will insert a very large, and painful, needle into this port in his chest, he will need to sit still for at least 3 hrs. this is done every two weeks. not counting the followup, blood draws, other shots to keep his white cell counts up etc... are you going put him in some sort of coma for 6 months??

I have no wish for anyone to die, let alone a child but i just watched a very close freind of mine die from cancer, she would have given anything to be cured like this boy, but she didnt get that chance. she left behind a six year old boy whom she loved more then life itself...

sorry but lots of people WANT to live...

"If not, you don't know the issues here."

A child has cancer. He has had one series of treatments and he and and his parents have decided they wish to seek alternate treatments. CPS and the courts have decided the parents' wishes should not be honored and the power of the state should be used to force unwanted medical treatment on the kid.

What am I missing?

You have just made eight posts crying about peyote.

Did you get beat up by a peyote user or something?

Who owns your body? I’m just curious to know who it is.

Especially since it’s unpleasant and doesn’t always work.

I am unable to see this as anything other than a political issue. While this is about a 13-year-old boy with cancer, in important ways it is not about that at all. As you say, this is about Who owns your body?

This is about government control of healthcare. This is about courts deciding who should (and should not) receive medical treatment. This is about Terry Schiavo.

Allowing a 13-year-old to make bad choices and die unecessarily is tragic. But the greater tragedy is a whole lot of "conservatives" basically saying -- "I want my government to force people to do whatever the bureaucrats think is best".

For myself, I prefer personal liberty and personal responsibility. The parents and the patient have made their wishes known. It's not my business.

You are so right. My youngest are 15 and 13 and they’d gladly do without soap and toothbrushes until they look like homeless bums. It’s revolting, and the immaturity of children and their ‘but I don’t want to’ attitude should be totally ignored if their silliness infringes on their health, hygiene, and well being.

Hope they find the kid in time to save his life.

The parents are objecting to treatment on religious grounds. They have their First Amendment rights.
