Once upon a time, government focused on law and order issues, perhaps with a smattering of infrastructure development. Social problems were largely dealt with at the local level by churches or charitable organizations.

Now, government uses tax funds to handle social problems and the magnitude of social problems is skyrocketing (what an odd coincidence). Meanwhile, government actively diminishes the role churches can play in society.

And the governor goes to churches and begs for support to continue this trend?
