Mr Obama fears a backlash against U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Further images purportedly from the 2,000 include one of a naked man covered in excrement with a guard standing in front of him.
Others yet to be released are alleged to show guards threatening to sexually assault a detainee with a broomstick and hooded prisoners in transport planes with copies of Playboy magazine showing naked women open on their laps.
The president had previously committed to allowing them to be seen but changed his mind after senior generals said it could place U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in greater danger.
The images were released in Australia yesterday where they were originally obtained by the television channel SBS in the wake of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal.
The release comes at an inopportune time for President Obama who is trying to build bridges with the Islamic world.
President Obama earlier vowed to fight to block the release of the 2,000 'inflammatory' photographs showing the abuse of prisoners by U.S. soldiers. He had previously said the administration would not oppose a court ruling demanding the release of hundreds of the classified photos.
This followed his decision to release the U.S. Justice Department memos detailing CIA interrogation methods, such as waterboarding, that he has now outlawed as torture. Aides say he changed his mind on the photos because 'he did not feel comfortable' with their release. He has asked his legal advisors to present a new case to judges saying that making the pictures public could imperil national security.
The White House legal team is now preparing for a June 9 deadline to present its case that it would be against the interests of national security to make them public.

Look no further than the offal office. Zero gets to have it both ways. Officially, he didn’t release the pics. But he made damn sure they got out.
The “leaker” is probably in the White House. This way Zero has it both ways. “ I tried to suppress them” and they got out anyway to damage the miliary. A win win for the Zero White House.
I haven't watched and will continue not to watch FOX News until that smarmy glorified Shamwow salesman is jettisoned.
The single photo published in this article is highly suspicious. The guy who’s hanging upside down naked (the caption breathlessly says “naked” twice; obviously the British reporter was highly impressed) has a neatly trimmed beard, and there are decorative comforters on the bunk bed. This looks more like a frat room scene than any sort of prisoner abuse.
And of course they just couldn’t resist including the classic Abu Ghraib photo of the guy in the pointy hat and poncho and wires. Never a photo of some grinning jihadi holding up Nick Berg’s head, you’ll notice.
The prisoner almost certainly did this to himself. They are taught as a tactic to smear excrement everywhere.
So what does this picture prove?
NOTHING!
Oh, no!!! Not that!!! God help me if anyone ever does that to me. I don't think I could stand that kind of torture.

From what I understand, the imates at Gitmo threw feces at guards a number of times. Is this man smeared in his own body waste as a protest? They also attacked guards a number of times (using "pitiful" ploys for attention).
Such a photo is not necessarily an indication of abuse.
It is true.
It’s all a shell game. He wants them released and knows they will ultimately be released. But he can play the role of commander in chief and pretend he cares about national security. It’s all a game to him.
