“If we can leave the social conservatism out of the national debate and get this central government back down to size and under control, then the other issues will take care of themselves at the state level.”
The concept that there are issues that should be dealt with at the state level instead of the federal level is even more controversial than abortion. Before we can make any real progress as conservatives we have to get this idea back online.
James Dobson (Focus on the Family) refused to back McCain (even though the one conservative issue McCain was actually strong on was abortion) because McCain said the issue should be handled at the state level and not the federal level (Dobson wanted to ammend the Constitution.)
Of all the reasons to oppose McCain, that wasn’t one of them.

savior????
That is all we need is our own GOP “savior?” The Dems have their own now we need one??? Sounds like MSM is trying to put a story out there for their ABS (Anything But Sarah) strategy.

“unfortunately, most people in this country get their news from ‘the daily show.’
having someone who is professionally trained to get their point across could help. we are a nation of soundbites and face recognition.”
After 4 years of all slick, I’m thinking someone like Bobby Jihdahl (sp?) might be a welcome breath of fresh air to many people.

For the record, I'm against both gay marriage and abortion, but these items need to be dealt with on the state level and we need to get the central government back to the small, limited role it was intended to have. How does one "deal with" abortion on a state level when it was judicially federalized 36 years ago (and gay marriage will be too, soon enough)?

Why do we care one way or another what people do for a living. I want a conservative what ever he is doing right now.Actors get elected because of name recognition. Fact of life. Some are really good and some are gosh awful.

he is too timid and monotone, imho. people do not listen to content if they are bored by the speaker. i am not saying it is right, but it's a fact.
most 'successful' presidents have been great orators. bush may not have been, but the people who ran against him sucked. and bush always had an 'everyman', off-the-cuff quality that people identified with. and he was charasmatic.

Right insists on making 2/3 of its federal-level priorities about social and religious issues,
What specifically are these "2/3 priorities", legislation, etc, that you speak of? And what Rightwing federal level legislators are working on them?
To: Zeddicus
Well said. You are quite correct.

In reality it is the left who wants to legislate and politicize these issues....for 40 years now. When pro-life groups and pro-family groups fight back, the MSM pretends it is the Right who want some kind of Taliban government. We did not initiate these fights on social issues...it is purely a defensive posture.
Unfortunately Republicans and some on FR often repeat this myth as convention wisdom when they want an excuse for losing.
