Bristol Palin says abstinence best path for teens

NEW YORK (AP) — Unwed mother Bristol Palin said Wednesday that abstinence is a realistic way for teens to avoid unwanted pregnancy — a view not shared by the father of her infant son.

Palin, the 19-year old daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, told ABC's "Good Morning America" that she wishes she'd waited to have sex.

Bristol Palin was in New York Wednesday to help promote National Teen Pregnancy Awareness Day.

In the interview, Palin said abstinence is the safest and best choice for teens.

"Regardless of what I did personally, I just think that abstinence is the only way you can effectively, 100 percent foolproof way you can prevent pregnancy," she said.

Palin's comments are a turnaround from what she told Fox News in February, that teens should avoid sex, but abstinence is "not realistic at all."

Congrats to your daughter! I’m one of those who said “no” until I was married. I knew I could never support a baby on my own and didn’t want to chance it. It isn’t rocket science. Just a little common sense is all that’s needed.

All credit are due to her and her mother. I just bask in their success.

This represents what we call “learning”.

Some people learn the easy way, others the hard way. Some never learn at all. It seems that Bristol learned the hard way, but she learned. That is to her credit.

Senior year of high school I was in elective human relations class. We had various presentations about sex. The health dept. spokesman talked about VD, a couple from the Crisis Pregnancy Center came by and gave a talk, then the senior class president. Her son was a few months old at the time. She said while she loved him that it had made a huge change in her life and she wished she would have waited. She had sex with her boyfriend only a few times and had always been “the good girl” in school. It showed a real situation rather than just an adult saying, “Don’t do this.”

Aww, you’re too modest. I’m sure having TWO great parents has something to do with it. I wish her a bright and happy future. :)

I’m the father of an 18 year old daughter, who not only graduates from high school next week but isn’t pregnant. I’d say she’s a better role model for abstinence than Bristol Palin is.

I always have to laugh when parents assume a daughter who managed NOT to get PG has never had sex. Some of the most promiscuous girls in my high school (and that was many years ago) managed to graduate without having a baby.

I recently heard a woman gossiping about a PG teen and was totally unaware her high school daughter was performing some impossible-to-get-PG sex acts with many young male students. I learned a long time ago to assume nothing and be prepared for anything.

Bristol matured in just a few months. She’s had more time to think about it. And it’s not easy to be a Mom when you’re young and all your friends are still “out there having fun” while you have a baby to tend.

The ONLY 100% foolproof safest plan is Abstinence.

And not only that . . . had she waited she would have had more time to learn that her boyfriend wasn’t nearly the “man” she thought he was. How many young teens actually end up marrying the teen who got them pregnant? What are the Statistics?

8% marry within the first year after the baby is born. They are also less likely to be married by age 35 than those teens who did not get pregnant. In 1980, 52% of teens were already married when they had a baby. By 2002, only 20% of teens who got pregnant were married. http://tinyurl.com/celsd7

Bristol Palin may be the start of a nice Tradtional Conservative trend among the teens who’ll listen to her.

Congratulations.

Our oldest daughter is scoping out graduate school, and our next oldest daughter is in high school. The youngest isn't old enough for any of that to be a concern yet.

Neither are or have been pregnant, in trouble with the law, or in any trouble to speak of. They do volunteer work, hold jobs as time allows, and are intelligent, accomplished, well-spoken young women.

Finding someone like Bristol Palin, who has made some truly terrible and tragic decisions, then make her look glamorous by giving her endless publicity is a horrible idea and sends a bad message.

Trying to tell teens Look what happens when you have a baby out of wedlock - people hang on your every word, you get to go on TV and wear pretty clothes and people will give you lots of attention won't benefit at-risk teens in any way.

Making a celebrity of Bristol Palin is wrong.

You may suspect she hasn't. But with Bristol Palin there is no doubt, now is there?

She believed something different on other occasions.

Howzat again ?

It's perfectly possible to believe one thing and do another. Somewhat symptomatic of immaturity, wouldn't you say ?

Unfortunately some people NEVER grow up and continue believing one thing and doing another - like our president.

Sounds to me like Bristol is growing up. Maybe a little late, but better late than never.

What a self-righteous, judgmental, superior-driven comment. In fact, many comments here are just that.

My daughter ended up pregnant at 15 after having sex her first and only time. She chose life and along with her courageous choice, she endured judgments, snickering and gossip from peers and their parents who thought “their kids were so much better.” My daughter is 16 now and has never once asked me for help. If this hadn’t happened, I would have never known to what extent she possessed such beauty, grace, maternal love, devotion and maturity. The way she loves her son, and the way he lights up in her presence is a miracle to behold.

She wishes she had waited. Lesson learned the hard way but out of ONE mistake (and which of us here hasn’t made a mistake?) came something beautiful - something positive.

Oh...one of her classmates is on the honor roll, does volunteer work and is among the “best and brightest.” She’s 16 and has had two abortions. Her parents still think she’s a virgin and I’ve endured the “bless your heart” comment from them when they found out about my daughter.

Bristol Palin isn’t perfect. She admits it. But neither is ANY teenager out there...even ones who don’t end up pregnant when they are teens.

Plus, the baby daddy is not paying for the baby's upkeep which means the daughter here is learning all about how parents provide for their young ones.

It's entirely possible she learned some stuff over the past few months ~ human beings are like that ~ they learn.

Now leftwingtards? They never learn. I don't see why they are allowed to vote in our elections.

Didn’t hear that, but they can live in the Governor’s mansion in the state capital, or out on the Peninsula at a summer home they usually rent out, or with friends, or with relatives, or over on the borough where Todd’s tribe lives, or...... looked more like they were ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL.
