NPR has learned that Supreme Court Justice David Souter is planning to retire at the end of the court's current term.

Let’s see if the republicans have the balls to bork the initial communist the clowns propose to fill the spot.
A great disappointment, he's been.
So a Liberal Justice will replaced with an Ultra-Liberal Justice. I won’t worry, unless a Conservative Justice or Justice Kennedy is replaced.
I just pray there are no other retirements at the end of this term. Maybe the Repubs can improve their Senate numbers after the 2010 elections, at least enough to sustain a filibuster or create enough havoc to persuade Barry to put up a more reasonable liberal nominee. I’m not holding my breath, however, given Stevens’ age and Ginsbarf’s health problems.
The article says he misses his native New Hampshire. Very flimsy.
” wonder if his replacement can be delayed for 3 1/2 years until Obama is voted out of office “
Not with only 40 Republicans in the U.S. Senate.
The media will go gaga again with the Messiah’s pick. They will claim that he is leveling the playing field for minorities, youth, and women.
I suspect Obama will appoint a 40 something liberal will be guided by what is “fair” and ignore the Constitution. “Fair” means no gay marriage bans, no border security, no resonable abortion restrictions like parent consent. The future judge will rule in favor of the Fairness Doctrine.
Clinton reprise from ‘93. He had succeeded a Bush, had a dumocrat majority senate, and shoved Ruth Buzzy Ginsburg, radical feminist and former ACLU lawyer down our throats.
Whoever it is will be big on foreign law. Heck it might not even be an American. Sorry Arlen, it won’t be YOU now!
The problem is that Obama will appoint a liberal to the Court who will sit there for the next 40 years.
So, in 2050 Souter’s replacement in be replaced.
Not to worry
Replacing a lib with another lib is not a crisis, just a trade.
If we lost a conservative judge, then we’d be screwed.
“Ah nominates Flip Wilson”!!
This is the best possible news conservatives can have. If Obama nominates a total lefty, the tea party folks that are already mobilized will take to the street; the pro-lifers will start sounding off (including PUMAs), and the Libertarians will come out (property rights). Replacing this guy is wonderful, now if only Justice Fencesitter (er. Stevens) would leave. Antonin, please stay healthy.
Good riddance. I dont see how we can do worse than this loser!

I’m afraid you’re in for a big shock.
Now we remember why we loathe NH. It will be interesting to see if Obama can find anybody worse. I really doubt he can.
hehe, well, yeah...but the dems did hold up some of Bush's appointments for a couple of years, but they weren't supreme court lvl.
But, we MAY stand a chance...those that VOTED this POS into office will be too busy watching American Idol to thwart the torches and pitchforks plan. ;)
Maybe they can tie tea bags to the pitch forks and torches and the liberals will be so busy making crass jokes they won't be able to stop the mob.
2nd plan, wait until Jon Stewart goes on vacation...all the liberals I know get their "news" from Stewart, so if he's out they won't have anyone to tell them what to think.
I would not bet on that.
And if Harry "the body" Reid makes sure there is enough pork in the bill for Maine, I know that there will be at least two Repubicans that will gladly vote for it.
Just wait. They'll have us distracted with some stupid thing (mmm, maybe get our collective fury directed toward a "Truth Commission," "Congressional Hearings on Torture," "Special Prosecutor," or something like that) and they'll slip it in with no negative comment from the right at all.
Stay vigilant.
The “swing” vote is Reagan’s liberal choice, A. Kennedy.
Perfect timing for the rat Specter.
Why bother?
How many Republicans voted against Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the most radical leftist, feminist, and obvious communist ever even considered for the Court?
Three.
Even if there were 65 Republicans in the Senate, Obama would have no trouble getting whomever he wanted confirmed.
But with 41-45, Obama can count on 20-25 defectors, so Franken is irrelevant.
