Does the U.S. Need an Auto Industry?
NYTimes ^ | 4/30/09 | Editors

With Chrysler filing for bankruptcy today, President Obama expressed confidence that the automaker will emerge stronger. But of course, it will be vastly changed, as will General Motors, which may face the same difficult decision come June 1, when it must complete its own restructuring. Under the administration’s plan, Chrysler will receive upwards of $8 billion in government support to get it through bankruptcy and to restart its operations.

Let’s see: American Motors Corporation merged with Renault just before they went bankrupt. Chrysler merged with Mercedes, and Mercedes jumped ship as the red ink rose above the gunwhales. Now Chrysler is merging with Fiat.

Hmm.

No, but an auto industry is very nice to have, provided it’s not loaded down with money sapping rules for the benefit of unions.

Yes; but not government owned or union owned. Privately owned yes.

Chrysler is going to give every other auto maker an STD.

I will add though, none of us knows how much foreign components go into our ‘American’ cars. I know there are places that seem to know, but I’m not convinced they really do.

“Ford is doing OK.”

Yes, it most certainly is. Ford is going to be the “last one standing” of the American automakers.

I hope Ford CEO Alan Mulally tells Obama what to go do with himself.

If you follow this logic we don’t need any industry.

Well, it NEEDS a good sound (local) heavy manufacturing base. I don't care if they make planes, trains, automobiles or ships, but we need a heavy industry infrastructure.

Shipping it all off shore is incredibly stupid.

And if car check gets passed, I could see the foreign guys manufacturing here pulling up stakes and going elsewhere. And I wouldn't blame them one bit.

I got and sent the following to the local GM dealership today. Names removed to protect:

Dear Sir:

After decades of being a GM customer I am sad to say that I Can’t buy GM vehicles anymore. It is a shame that others like yourself and Dealership will be hurt in a small way by my action and I apologize for that. My Grandfather was paint shop foreman in the Kansas City Fisher Body plant for decades, he died of chronic resperatory disease contributed to by all those years of breathing volatile paint fumes. I think the line-up of 2010 cars is good and I wanted to buy a new LaCrosse, it looks like it will be a fine car.

The issue is this, I can’t buy a vehicle built by a company that has been destroyed by a Union that has made no concessions to preserve it. The right thing was for GM to have gone bankrupt in an orderly Chapter 11 proceeding which would have forced renegotiation of contracts, the company could have corrected mistakes and gone on. Obama could not allow this to happen, he had debts to pay to UAW with our money. I have other reasons and they are:

1. I do not agree with the favors given in return for support of a President that is working to destroy America and that have been paid to the Union with taxpayer money, these billions will not be recovered.
2. We have a Constitution and our Nation is founded on free enterprise, not the Fascism that the government partnership with GM now represents
3. I have deep and fundamental disagreements with the way the country is being run and will do all I can to resist the actions and policies of the current administration in every legal way I can ...this is just one of those actions.

I will drive my current vehicles until they need to be replaced and if I can replace them when the time comes it will be with vehicles NOT built by a Union shop that has suppored a person such as Obama or a company that has been taxpayer subsidized.

Please remove me from your mailing list.

Best regards,
XXXXXXX

Sir:

This is just a friendly reminder that GM is offering 0% Financing (with approved credit) for purchase terms up to 72 months and rebates up to $12,000.

This opportunity will end at close of business today (April 30th, 2009) 9:00 p.m. We would certainly like to be able to use this program to help anyone in their purchase of a new vehicle.

Thank you for your time.

We’ve got a Mountaineer and a Mariner. The Mariner is a hybrid, and I really love that smaller SUV. Got 34.4 mpg on the way back from Paradise to Glendale a month back, and that included going over the grapevine.

I’m sure there are plenty of mexican and likely chinese made parts that go into my Fords but that’s pretty much the norm on just about any car built in North America today.

The last factory I worked in made Cadillac door panels as their bread and butter job but also made Jeep and Toyota parts.
