Less than one in four identify as Republican
The Hill ^ | 4/29/09 | Reid Wilson

Less than a quarter of all voters call themselves Republicans, a number that has dropped precipitously over the past six years, according to a new analysis.

In more than 7,000 interviews conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2009, just 23 percent of voters self-identify as members of the Grand Old Party. That's down from 30 percent as recently as 2004, and the trend shows no signs of slowing.

The number has dropped because former Republicans now label themselves as Conservatives,...

Bingo!

Pew used to be the in house research organization for the Tribune.

Some time after they sun it off from the paper, they changed the name to Pew Research, (guess that sounded less biased than Tribune Research).

About four years ago they dropped this bit of history from their web site.

The bias and accuracy are the same as when they admitted the connection to the Trib

Well, they didn’t ask me. I’m a proud Republican Conservative. I don’t betray my country or party, although I don’t always agree with what is done. I was a Democrat and a liberal...NEVER AGAIN! Nor will I vote for a Democrat because I know that they come with the baggage of that party...Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Teddy Kennedy, Barabara Lee, Barabara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, ect.

I wouldnt identify myself as a Repub until they return to being the party of Reagan. In fact, I fully intent to change my voter registration from Repub to No Party affiliation.

Don’t disagree with anyone here; the Republicans under GW Bush were a complete disaster, nonentities who stood for nothing other than their own advancement. But, you need to remember back in 1975/6, in the lows of post-Watergate and with a President whose high points were demanding universal vaccination for a nonexistent (then) swine flu (the vaccine killed many more people than the flu) and wearing idiot WIN buttons, there were tv documentaries heralding the imminent death of the Republican Party, “beyond recovery”. Dems won traditionally Republican seats even in rural areas. Then in 1980 came along one of our five greatest Presidents, surprise, a Republican, who beat the tar out of a thoroughly incompetent leftist named Freddy Jarter or some such name.

The GOP has reached rock bottom because most conservatives simply don't trust the party to be a trustworthy vehicle for their ideals.

They'll either start to re-establish their bona fides or be replaced by another party soon. The departure of Specter helped in a big way, I think.

I suspect you might find a similar number if you poll FReepers. LOL

Yep! I've never considered myself a Republican. I'm a conservative who tends to vote R, because they are taking our nation to HELL in a slow boat vs a Democrat Express Train.

I always identify myself as an independent and/or as a conservative, but I’ve voted Republican almost my entire life.

I’ve been unhappy about a lot of things the Republican party has done recently, but you won’t catch me voting for the other party either.

I think they are asking the wrong question, at best, fixing the survey at worst.

In order to reverse the trend the schools would have to be recaptured, removal of leftist control of movies and television achieved; a purge of leftist influence in our churches; strict and enforced standards as to voting etc. The type of population demographics now in the USA would not tolerate the steps necessary to achieve a two party system of the type we once had. “Our Diversity Is Our Strength” is winning. It is a process and it is approaching the end for the GOP. The options are becoming limited.

People are abandoning the "Republican" label because it no longer represents conservatism.

To stem the flow, the GOP leadership will continue to move closer to the liberals on every position, because they're idiots.

Letting the current GOP leadership "fix" the problem is exactly like letting Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi "fix" the economy.

Republican party ID in 1977 was 22%, while Democrat party ID was 47%.

See the data here.

Three years later was 1980.....

I don't even consider myself a "conservative" anymore - there's nothing about our nation as it's now constructed that I have any desire to "conserve".

I'm ready to ditch the whole dadgum experiment and start over from scratch.

I wish more would read the article:

Republicans are not ready to jump into bed with the other side. Though Democratic identification has inched up in the past six years, former Republicans are now largely calling themselves independents.

The article goes on to say RAT identification has dropped to 33%... Some RATS are also Independents...

There are a lot of people that vote Republican for POTUS that don’t call themselves Republican. Even a RINO is a lot less dangerous than the marxists that country the RAT party.

"...What is at stake is more than one small country, it is a big idea—a new world order, where diverse nations are drawn together in common cause to achieve the universal aspirations of mankind..." --George H.W. Bush

That's where the Republican Party lost me.

Get back to real conservatism, liberty and sovereignty and we'll talk. I'm not holding my breath.
