WASHINGTON Several officials say veteran Republican Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania intends to switch parties, advancing his own hopes of winning a new term next year while pushing Democrats one step closer to a 60-vote filibuster-resistant majority.
The sources said an announcement could come later in the day or Wednesday. The officials who provided the information did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss his plans.
Specter is a 79-year-old veteran of five Senate terms, and one of only a handful of moderate Republicans left in Congress in a party made up largely of conservatives.

He has always been a dem. Just making it official.
Good bye you son of a bitch!!!
“only a handful of moderate Republicans left in Congress in a party made up largely of conservatives.”
rotflmao!
Don’t let the door hit you in the arse you loser.
Wish he had done this a couple of decades ago, but better late than never.
And this is why I detest self proclaimed ‘moderates’ and why my tagline is what it is.
Feh. A pox on you for waiting this long to admit it.
I’m of two minds on this. I hate to see 60 Dems, but good riddance to one of the biggest RINOs in the Senate.
Dont let the door hit you in the @$$ on the way out!!!!!!
What a coward.
Good f**king riddance!!
“Arlen Specter’ you are using up too much natural resourses!!! Time to go:-)
Good this way he can stop giving cover to the rats
Been sleeping with them long enough, might as well make it legit.
How would we notice the difference?
Good riddence to bad rubbish.
Reading Specter’s statement, I conclude we have a victory for conservatives.
Specter ran off because he was going to lose the primary.
First, we just moved the GOP to the right.
Second, we now have a choice between a centrist and a conservative, whereas 2010 would have been centrist and liberal without Toomey. We are actually in BETTER shape now than if Toomey ran against Specter in the primary.
Third, we have just made it clear that stimulus support equates to losing GOP primaries.
Toomey will face an uphill battle in a general election of Toomey v Specter, but it will be no more uphill than against a lib Dem.
I usually don’t like ‘net acronyms or profanity online but Specter is a POS.
Absolutely!
We can hope until 2010 he won’t be a factor...then hope he is sent the he11 home.
[How DO you spell secession?]
Not going to happen, Arlen baby! There won’t be ANY dems in congress once we have the 2010 elections, not after all the damage they and HolyO have caused America!!
Perfect timing, you big ol’ RINO you! LOL! :-)
