Mexico canceled school nationwide Monday and warned the death toll from a swine flu epidemic believed to have killed 149 people would keep rising before it can be contained. Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said 20 of the deaths have been confirmed to be from swine flu and the government was awaiting results on the others.
"We are the most critical moment of the epidemic. The number of cases will keep rising so we have to reinforce preventive measures," Cordova said at a news conference that was briefly shaken by an earthquake centered in southern Mexico.

Indeed. If the mortality rate is really 6% or higher, we really ought to take it serious. Other countries are. It's just the U.S. with it's PC attitudes, that's thinking closing the border is worse than protecting it's citizens.
Have you read about the ridiculous response in Mexico?

Click plenty of reason to be alarmed
I don’t disagree with that.
I’m quite comfortable with Schwarzenegger in charge. /s
Thank you. I’ve been over there putting in different search parameters and you can find some interesting things.
Yes because they don't raise pigs, geese, and ducks down there. Just jalapenos and corn.

Average death rates from flu are about 0.06 percent. Death rate from the Spanish Flu was between 2.5 and 5 per cent (depending on your source). So far the mortality rate in Mexico (if you trust the figures of 1600 reported cases and 149 reported deaths) is about 9.3 per cent or roughly double (or more) the death rate from the Spanish Flu which was the most deadly pandemic in history. Now whether or not the strain in the US is more benign or not remains to be seen. My concern would be that if Mexican nationals cross the border illegally to avoid the epidemic and are already infected, then they would probably avoid going to the doctor so their illegal status would not be detected. That would make it easier for it to spread as well as giving it more of a chance to mutate. Just my 2 cents.
SPECULATION:
It’s not so strange if you consider that this may be a biological ‘attack’ (it’s still a possibility).
It’s no secret that our porous border provides a pretty easy-to-penetrate one for those wishing us harm - mainly Muslim Islamic Terrorists...
Not to get all “Tom Clancy” here, but there is a chance that an operative didn’t get into the US “in time”, or that there was an accident in “transport”, or a clumsy “kitchen chemist” or something at work there in Mexico, either...
This scenario isn’t completely “off the mark” as far as feasibility either. Our military and government have been aware of threats of biological weapons for a long time (remember Mustard Gas in WWI). Plus, there are pro-terrorist folks out there saying that this is “Allah’s will against the US” which is strange, again considering the probable “epicenter” was in Mexico. As I said on another thread regarding the terrorists “rejoicing” in this - they are either taking credit, or they are simply total fools... Who knows with those folks...

Please! It’s bad enough as it is!
According to a doctor on Cavuto on Fox News today there is about a one percent mortality rate to this flu so he thinks Mexico has about 100,000 cases or more.
Well, from one report it appears they do have some hogs down there on a farm, with a big pond/lake like pit of pig droppings. That isn’t helpful.
They’re now wondering if that was mud (so to speak) zero.
Talk about your brain twisting theories, I’ve got a scenario for you.
With all this talk of the right wing being on the verge of terrorism, nobody is talking about a left wing-nut that might decide it’s about time to thin the herd.
With the atmosphere on U.S. campuses these days, it does make you wonder if some genetics major could come up with a doozie, if they put their mind to it.
I still have to say that at this point, I think we’re looking at mother nature as suspect number one, but hey, I’m open to discussion on the topic.
Until then, I think they should at least do a work up for the APB on Mother Nature, just in case.
Oh, I have COMPLETELY thought of the possibility of Ayers or someone like him making good on his proposed theory back in the 1960s that approximately 25 million “hard-core” conservatives(capitalists) would need to be “eliminated” in order to achieve his radical violent communist revolution dreams... And, people thought we were crazy to worry about Obama’s friendship with Ayers?
[I can search for the video about it - an interview with an FBI agent who infiltrated the Weather Underground is the one who testified to that - if anyone is interested, or hasn’t seen that. It’s on my favorites over at YouTube]
Also history has shown that communists often ‘eat their own’ as they scramble to be “king of the mountain” within their organizations. Not sure how that would play into a speculative theory on this... but Obama was just down in South America meeting with a whole bunch of communist and fascist buddies.
A Sci-Fi/Political/Thriller writer (like Clancy) could probably come up with some pretty scary, and yet completely plausible theories with the relatively small amount of information we currently have on all of this, combined with known threats, and the ease of travel/spread of disease in our world.
Plus, the response of the public has been varied widely - from not being worried at all, to thinking it’s a “false flag” event promoted by our fascist leader, or bio-terrorism, or God, etc... I honestly wish this were a bad dream instead of a reality — even though I’m not panicked, but practicing cautious optimism at this point... :)
I think many of us are still in the “throwing it all up and seeing what sticks” mode of things at this stage I would think — at least those of us discussing this here are...
My daughter [FReeper Izzy_Box] is calling it the “Chimera Flu” due to the 3 different pig strains, the avian strain, and the human strain.
I definitely think the media, and ESPECIALLY the CDC, and WHO, and our world governments should stop calling it “Swine Flu”. That is a dangerous misnomer, IMHO.
Normal swine flu viruses have been around for a long time, and contagion vectors (I think that’s the right term), as well as ‘prognosis’ is way different than for this “Mexiflu”, “Chimera Flu”, “ManBirdPig Flu”, or whatever you want to call it. :)
While I wouldn’t put something like this past Ayers, I’m thinking more of the green sky is falling global warming crowd. Some of those folks would like to see a hundred million less humans on planet earth.
I still tell the story of a pharmacist I worked with, who said he would love to see a catastrophe befall mankind and kill off a lot of people. He was dead serious.
We’re not talking about people with no education.
