Liz Cheney Gives A Debate Lesson
The American Thinker Blog ^ | April 26, 2009 | Larrey Anderson

Posted on 04/26/2009 4:57:45 PM PDT by Scanian

There is a video up on Powerline that should be of interest to readers of American Thinker.

Dick Cheney’s daughter, Liz, gives MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell a lesson in reporting and debating.

Notice how Liz Cheney (who worked as an assistant deputy secretary of state under W) refuses to accept the premise of several of the questions. O’Donnell is clearly trying to trap Cheney with “When did you stop beating your husband?” logic. But Cheney isn’t biting.

The purported topic is whether or not Dick Cheney and Condolezza Rice authorized torture. But Cheney doesn’t buy in to the false assumption.

The moderator, in this case O’Donnell, has a huge advantage in these discussions. The moderator controls the topic. (Notice how O’Donnell stops Cheney from speaking when Norah insists that a “full screen” quote be displayed. As I have pointed out, this is a standard “gottcha” tactic used when conservatives are speaking on national television.)

Republicans (especially debate novices like Sarah Palin) could learn much from watching this interview.

I distinctly remember during the Republican presidential primary debates when the Republican candidates were asked to raise their hands if they believed in man made global warming. Like good little first graders, all but one did. Watch the video carefully. Fred Thompson stopped the nonsense.

At that moment I knew what a sorry pack of losers made up the “leadership” of the Republican Party.

If the Republican Party wants a real debater in a leadership position … it should take a long, hard look at Liz Cheney.

I have never seen anyone do a better job.

Uh, Liz was nearly as good as Dick Cheney in the VP debates.

I've never noticed any particular difficulty Sarah Palin has, with speaking her mind.

Stay on track and stop trying to hijack this thread into a Sarah Palin topic/argument.

This is about Liz Cheney..........

Fred 2012. I'll still vote for him.

The gratuitous dig at Palin was telling. What elective office has Ms. Cheney ever won with her mad debating skillz, speaking of novice?

Your inference here is that it was Ms. Cheney who took a dig a Sarah Palin and that was not the case.

Norah O'Donnell was desperate not to be bested by Lynn Cheney, she was using all her advantages and techniques, and all to no avail.

Bravo...bravissimo, Lynn Cheney!

The author took a cheap shot at Sarah Palin so there is no hijacking here Mr. Modwannabee.

Obviously you have a problem with Liz Cheney. Care to share?

I have no interest in playing along with your unspoken assumption, lol. Mary has nothing to do with this. Neither does Liz, even though being former State should give any conservative pause.

What I do have a problem with, is getting a gratuitous dig in against Sarah Palin, who performed admirably in a genuine, televised national debate in a Presidential election. Novice? What's the agenda here, really?

Citizens Uh-RAY-usst, Citizens Uh-RAY-usst!

The article that is under discussion contains an unflattering reference to Sarah Palin. It is completely on-topic, therefore, to discuss it, so bite me.

Liz dismantled Nora. It was brilliantly done.

Outstanding debate by Liz Cheney. She had the mastery of the subject and refused to accept the wrong, biased premises of Norah O’Donnell, which were probably fed to her through an earpiece.

The se techniques were not torture.

As for the Geneva Convention, there are two important points:

1. The Convention covers uniformed combatants. No rights are proscribed for no-uniformed enemy combatants.

2. Since we signed it in 1947, the Geneva Convention has not protected ONE American soldier in a major conflict. Torture and death have been visited on American POWs in staggering numbers since we signed that worthless piece of paper.

Liz Cheney also brought out the brillaint point that our enemies now can read of our self imposed interrogation limits on-line and train accordingly.

Obam has weakened us, given aid and comfort to our enemies, and set us for additional attacks. That is a violation of his oath of office.

I watched this. The woman is excellent at expressing herself and retaining some control over this interview with a very hostile anchor.

I apologize but I can't scroll up to the top. What is the title of this thread again?

You're hijacking the thread dude.........if you can't stay on the topic (Liz Cheney) then leave it alone.

Liz Cheney didn’t say anything about Sarah Palin in that interview. That comment was on the blog that linked to the video.

Liz was great at shutting up Norah!

Of course she has never run for anything which is why your comment is rather puzzling. Take your issues up with the author. Miss Cheney did nothing but excel so leave her out of it.

What is the subject matter of the article that is the topic of this thread, dude? That subject matter is the reason for my replies here, and I will reply on that basis with or without your overweening desire to play gatekeeper.

Got that?

As good as she is I do wish she had hammered home more the point that saving lives is a concrete good while “looking good in the eyes of the world” is an empty abstraction.

The idiot across from the table from her said something to the effect that what little information we got wasn’t worth lowering our image in the world.

I dearly wish Liz would have laid into her on that, something like:

So saving American lives is a small thing to you, while looking good in the eyes of the world is more important?

But regardless, Liz is great. I hope to see more of her.
