When President Obama gave his economics speech at Georgetown University on Tuesday, several folks noticed something was missing.
That "something" was an ancient monogram -- the letters IHS -- that symbolizes the name of Jesus. It was missing from a wooden archway above the dais in Gaston Hall where the president delivered his 45-minute speech.
The gold-lettered monogram appeared near a painting of three female figures -- symbolizing morality, faith and patriotism -- and decorative edging along the wall that spelled out the Jesuit motto "Ad majorem Dei gloriam""To the greater glory of God." Georgetown was founded by the Jesuits.
Some of them may have been turning in their graves in the cemetery across campus at the sight of the missing monogram which looked like a blacked-out space above a blue backdrop and a row of American flags flanking the nation's chief executive. Was Georgetown selling short its Catholic heritage, we wondered.
I contacted the university this morning to ask why the monogram -- in this post-Easter season -- was hidden as its absence had been noted by several bloggers, including Dawn Eden -- formerly of the New York Post -- on her dawn patrol blog.
Julie Bataille from the university's press office e-mailed me that the White House had asked that all university signage and symbols behind the stage in Gaston Hall be covered.
"The White House wanted a simple backdrop of flags and pipe and drape for the speech, consistent with what they've done for other policy speeches," she wrote. "Frankly, the pipe and drape wasn't high enough by itself to fully cover the IHS and cross above the GU seal and it seemed most respectful to have them covered so as not to be seen out of context."

John Ashcroft was embarrassed by the nudity behind him, so is Barry Obama embarrassed by the Cross behind him? Must be.
It is all so confusing, Obama wasn't embarrassed when he was campaigning with the Cross behind him, Maybe Obama is just a measly little superficial hypocrite.
Yeah, like Dracula.
If you have viewed it before, refresh image as I added a frame with the IHS symbol.
He’s an evil B*****d.
HYPOCRITE!
I think you’re on to something, there.
That’s what I was thinking, but my wife says it’s because he’s the Antichrist.
If he did not like the symbols and what they symbolized, or if he thought it somehow conflicted with the separation of church and state to have a cross and our Lord and Saviour’s name above the flags, — well, then, he should not have accepted the speaking engagement there.
He was a guest for gosh sake. What kind of a guest goes to someone’s house and asks them to change their decorating? A very ill-mannered uneducated crude rude guest, that’s who.
.
Recall that he put out a long row of American flags even during his campaign against McCain
Brought out his “panel of experts” as if he was already elected
When he was bowing down to his islamic king - they did not cover up any religious symbols
I don’t like to see the American flag used for decoration or some sort of curtain.
heheh - “Barackula”
Remember his plane and his podium with “President Elect” on them? Never has another candidate, nominee or President Elect acted like him.
Bump!
I suspect that Obama will soon want to hide the American Flags behind him.
He is Muslim so why would he care? How many Christians bow down to the King of Saudi? Zero, zip, nada but ZERO did. That bunting is inappropriate IMHO where he is speaking. If he didn’t want religious symbols then don’t go to Georgetown.
Shame on Georgetown for covering up the symbols of their faith. The person that agreed is no better then ZERO and his staff for demanding they be covered up.
Obligatory “FR is NOT a blog!” BTT...
I think if the general population were aware of this event they would be astounded.
I agree about Georgetown. I am Catholic and am ashamed that they did this. They had a choice of obeying God or catering to Obama and they chose wrong.
