America has forgotten its heroes. This month marks 50 years since those with the right stuff were selected to be the Mercury Seven. Ony one place in the country will mark the occasion with an appearence by Scott Carpenter at the new science museum in Warminster, PA. The location where all the early astronauts tained for the rigors of space flight in the big centrifuge there. We need to make some noise and challange the government to honor these men before they pass from the scene altogether. Forget politics, men like these will not walk the earth again.

There’s still some of us who remember the original seven astronauts. I can think of six of them without cheating using google. Shepard, Carpenter, Cooper, Schirra, Glenn, Grissom... so who am I forgetting?

Thanks for posting this.
I long for an America which once again thinks nothing is impossible.

Deke Slayton never flew Mercury do to a heart murmur, Slayton later flew the Apollo - Soyuz docking mission in 1975.

I wouldn’t have thought of him.
For real bonus points you have to name them in flight order, and name their capsules ;-)
And then there’s the name of the Cosmonaut who beat us into space. And the dog and chimp who went into space.

Without Googling, I think they were Garagin, Ham, and Laika!

I haven't used google yet. But a sidenote on Scott Carpenter. Carpenter played around too much with the capsule controls and spent up the onboard maneuvering fuel. He landed a few hundred miles off course. It took a few hours for the Navy to pick him up. He never got another ride. After he left the astronaut corps he went into deep sea diving in test submersible vehicles for the Navy.

Judging by the headline I was half expecting a taxidermy story.

Poor Laika. That doggie went up with no plan for him coming back down.
My wife was raised in the Soviet Union but was not taught about Laika. She was taught about Belka and Strelka because they later went up and returned safely.

It WAS a fantastic series....it aired last June 08 for the 50th anniversary. (sorry I should have indicated that in my post:)
I was riveted, and could not wait to watch the next show.

Well worth the purchase.

Interesting. Wikipedia has another explanation for being off course. I had not heard this.

I remember Able and Baker the monkeys that went up before the manned mission. Scott Carpenter is the only person with a Astronaut and Aquanaut designation.
