Ex-McCain aide to call for gay marriage support [Steve Schmidt] [says is a God-given right]

Washington (CNN) - Steve Schmidt, a key architect of John McCain's presidential campaign, is making his first public return to Washington a bold one.

Schmidt will use a speech Friday to Log Cabin Republicans, a gay rights group, to urge conservative Republicans to drop their opposition to same-sex marriage, CNN has learned.

"There is a sound conservative argument to be made for same-sex marriage," Schmidt will say, according to speech excerpts obtained by CNN. "I believe conservatives, more than liberals, insist that rights come with responsibilities. No other exercise of one's liberty comes with greater responsibilities than marriage."

How about this. “I do not want to hire a Jew because they are Christ killers and I do not want my employees exposed to that filth...’(or whatever reason)

I do not want want to hire Catholics because they cause inquisitions and look the other way when priests molest kids ...”( or whatever)

Religious choice is a behavior, which one can change (like homosexuality): should one be able to discriminate on those grounds?

I’m just testing the boundaries of your decision rules

I am not sure if I am creeped out or flattered that you are so interested in me. I must have hit a nerve, showing how too many “conservatives” favor only favor freedom when it forwards their own agenda

I agree I make extreme cases, but that is where the interesting debate lies

basic freedoms exist to protect unpopular minorities; the Founding Fathers understood this. If a particular county/town (or whatever) is 50.01% Muslim, should they be able to impose Sharia? That would be majority rule. Should “activist” judges prohibit this. I think so.

so do you favor banning alcohol and tobacco? How about doughnuts, soda and potato chips? All those are consumed to excess at great social cost. If not, what is your decision rule? I don’t see consistency or principle

The argument for polygamy - widely practiced in ancient Israel, almost no condemnation of it in the Bible, still widely practiced around the world, practiced by many or most animals - is far stronger than for homosexuality.

It is hard to argue that there is ANYTHING natural about sticking one’s penis inside a man’s butt.

Can you imagine this being discussed at the Constitutional Convention? “George Washington, what do YOU think about fudge-packing? Yea, or Nay?”

I’m so sorry for your loss. To me, it seems even harder to lose someone due to the choices they make in life. It is so incredibly sad when it happens, whatever that choice is. We hurt for them when they are here, and it all feels so senseless when we lose them.

I knew a kid from the foster home I was in and he ended up killing himself due to being with homosexuals

That is the reason why I fight tooth and nail to stop children being used in their social agenda

I think, as science suggests, people are born gay, so you must mean rape which I of course oppose. Otherwise I support the pursuit of freedom and happiness among consenting adults; as long as one does no other direct harm, they should be free to associate with whom they see fit.

I do not think anyone chooses to be gay or straight. We do not choose to whom we are attracted. Did you rationally, step by step, choose fall in love with your spouse? I did not.

I probably know 50 gay and lesbian people. Not a single one has ever tried to “make me gay”, if that is even possible.

I think government should stay out of the marriage business altogether

My marriage is sacred because I swore before God, my family and friends to love honor and cherish. What gay or other straight people has no effect on it. Even thrice divorced Rush Limbaugh, divored Saint Ronald Reagan or married for five minutes Brittany Spears cannot make my marriage any less scared. My wife and I have complete control over it.
