Speaking at an anti-tax protest yesterday, the Texas governor brought up the fact that Texas had the right to secede from the union if thing in Washington got bad enough.
Now before we go further, let's set a little background:
Texans are fiercely prideful. You've probably seen the phrase "Don't Mess with Texas" before. It was originally meant to be an anti-littering slogan, but Texans have turned the phrase into a catch-all statement of the state's independent spirit.
Texans like to talk about independence and the fact that it's been part of six countries in its history.
That being said, it might be fun to daydream about what an independent Texas state would be like. There's a whole host of great country songs that could be its national anthem. Like, perhaps, Waltz Across Texas or All My Exes Live in Texas.
If it did secede, we hope that they can come up with something regarding Texas atheletics, so that the football teams can still participate in the NCAA. It'd be boring for the University of Texas (disclosure: my alma matter) to just beat up on Texas A&M every Saturday.
Here's one thing we do know. An independent nation of Texas would be energy independent.
Specifically, with respect to the supply of Oil and Gas. Would an independent Texas be able to produce enough oil and gas to serve its own population, with some left over for export ? Indeed it would. In fact, Texas produces more oil than any other state and accounts for 19.7% of total US output. Texas also produces more than 30% of US natural gas supply. Texas does consume a goodly portion of its own oil output, about 75% of what it produces. But, it only consumes half of its own natural gas production.

If it could be done peacefully, then would you be in favor of it?
Interesting rumblings. It must be registering on the Socialists Encroaching In State’s Methods of Operation - SEISMOGRAPHS.
Got earthquakes? BUMP!
called my friend in TX yesterday just to make sure I have an address when we defect. has a spot for my airplane too, so looks like TEXAS will be the place to go.
How so? Are you saying that "might makes right"? If that is your reason then your logic is faulty. The Appomatax surrender only made the score 1-0. There is no way to say who would prevail in a second contest based on the first.
I think a fair study of the precedents and source documents from that era demonstrates that the Southern states were well within their legal right to seceed from the union. One might hope that a second secession attemp would be dealt with via legal means and elections, not by force.
Certainly it is difficult for me to see what logic leftists would use to force recalcitrant states to remain in the USA by force. These are the people who have protested every military action by the USA for decades, even ones designed to overthrow brutal tyrants. How then could these same promoters of peace at all costs, and autonommy for groups as diverse as Palestininans and Kosovar Albanians deny the same rights to fellow Americans who have tired of FedGov?
I think you should reconsider the idea that the Civil War (1) was the conclusive proof of total American unity.
From a historical point of view the Russians decisively put down independence attempts by their captive states (a term that might legitimately be applied to all of the former confederecy) many times in the 1950s and 60s, including armed interventions in Hungary in 1956 and the infamous Prague Spring in 1968. Still in 1998 those states, and many others, regained their independence.
Many other examples abound throughout history of empires devolving back into smaller states. Why are you so sure it can not, and should not, happen here. Do you really want to be a permanant minority in a the new Aztlan dominated USA that Obama is constructing?
not gona happen....Perry does not have the b*((s to do it. He is a sorry sorry governor and behind every one’s back is pushing hard for that trans highway from Mexico to Canada. He needs to shut his frigging mouth. He is only interested in furthering his political career, not helping out Texas
That is a myth. The only thing different in regards to Texas statehood is that they could, if they so desired, break themselves apart into as many as five seperate states, but they would all remain in the Union.
yes it is
no he does not. I live in Texas and he is all for himself. He is just like the O....says what you want to hear, when you want to hear it...he has never had Texas as a main interest.
BINGO!!!!
Nope...it’s sedition pure and simple. Perry is a fool. I am embarrassed over some of this stuff.
come on dowm.....we need more conservative.....
A NATIVE BORN TEXAS ....
Exactly, I heard some woman -Bachman- talking about Fema re-education camps...craziness.
Fine-let them support themselves-no fed money, no military support...how soon do you suppose they would become part of Mexico?
PALIN....YES
PERRY....NO
He is a bigger crook than the O
The governor of Texas is a world class political opportunist. This time I think he may have shot his mouth off just a bit too much. Perhaps the AG in Texas or a U.S. Attorney could remind the governor of the penalty for treason in this country and a history teacher from the local junior high could drop him a memo on what happened the last time some governors thought states had the right to secede from the Union.
Up until the polls turned he was a professed compassionate conservative, just like his friend Jorge. The man would sell his mother for a buck!!
yes they would, and I’d be the first to welcome you.
A NATIVE BORN TEXAN
What sort of military does Texas have that can withstand the might of the American military commanded by the current Comm. in Chief?
Or does Gov. Perry think an American military in its entirety would just disobey orders to protect the union?
It’s nothing more but political grandstanding. A lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.
Just wondering....who would you all rather have as Governor of Texas: Rick Perry (who’s got some issues, I know, but still...) or KBH (who’s pro-abortion and said nasty things about Sarah Palin)???
