Speaking at an anti-tax protest yesterday, the Texas governor brought up the fact that Texas had the right to secede from the union if thing in Washington got bad enough.
Now before we go further, let's set a little background:
Texans are fiercely prideful. You've probably seen the phrase "Don't Mess with Texas" before. It was originally meant to be an anti-littering slogan, but Texans have turned the phrase into a catch-all statement of the state's independent spirit.
Texans like to talk about independence and the fact that it's been part of six countries in its history.
That being said, it might be fun to daydream about what an independent Texas state would be like. There's a whole host of great country songs that could be its national anthem. Like, perhaps, Waltz Across Texas or All My Exes Live in Texas.
If it did secede, we hope that they can come up with something regarding Texas atheletics, so that the football teams can still participate in the NCAA. It'd be boring for the University of Texas (disclosure: my alma matter) to just beat up on Texas A&M every Saturday.
Here's one thing we do know. An independent nation of Texas would be energy independent.
Specifically, with respect to the supply of Oil and Gas. Would an independent Texas be able to produce enough oil and gas to serve its own population, with some left over for export ? Indeed it would. In fact, Texas produces more oil than any other state and accounts for 19.7% of total US output. Texas also produces more than 30% of US natural gas supply. Texas does consume a goodly portion of its own oil output, about 75% of what it produces. But, it only consumes half of its own natural gas production.

“Doesn’t sound like Texas would be a very healthy place for you to be.”
A week or so after the necessary arrests, I suspect it will be safe enough. It won’t take four years to put down this time around.
“You know what they say in Texas - if first you don’t secede, try, try and try again!”
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. :)
First issue, Bush was NOT conservative. At a minimum, he was a moderate, but I have doubts about that. McCain was even further left. Those "majority of voters" you speak of were suckered by a slick-talking weasel from the inner city in the belief that they were going to get a ton of government freebies.
Second issue, do you honestly believe that the Dems and ACORN didn't work to fix election results? If so, you are on the wrong website.
I checked up on the secede stuff...you have the right to break Texas into more than one state-not secede according to my sources...glad you don’t advocate such a thing. No state has such a ‘right’.
Well, I would support lethal injection for secessionist traitors...hanging is just gruesome!
So? Start a Conservative party and win voters to your side...the secession talk is treason plain and simple. As for fixing the election results...no I think Obama won fair and square...not close enough to steal. You do your party or your country no service when you advocate secession...it’s just plain wrong.
Jim warned about this some time ago...be careful what you post...I got the impression that this site was being monitored. This secession talk is just nuts.
So it is your conclusion that might makes right? How mundane.
Since you seem to be so fond of Sam Adams:
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen. -Sam Adams If men, through fear, fraud, or mistake, should in terms renounce or give up any natural right, the eternal law of reason and the grand end of society would absolutely vacate such renunciation. The right to freedom being the gift of Almighty God, it is not in the power of man to alienate this gift and voluntarily become a slave. -Sam Adams All might be free if they valued freedom, and defended it as they should. -Sam Adams The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men. -Sam Adams
If Texans and others swept up in a form of mass, though still of a tiny, tiny, minority, lunacy over losing an election think treason is the answer, well, as with most choices in life, there will be consequences arising from that choice, just as there was in 1861.
You are somehow under the misguided notion that this is over "losing an election".
As for treason, it walks the halls of power, and has for some time - seemingly with your tacit approval, as you would not lift a hand to remedy it, and would call those who would, "treasonous".
I am a peacable man, and like all Americans, would much prefer an amicable solution but sooner or later, one must draw a hard line. I would prefer it to be "sooner", while we still have the means to defend that line.
And as to the consequences, had our fathers been so timid as to be warned off by consequences, we would all be German thralls right now. Freedom has it's price.
Oh, and r, dont think for a moment that US Attorneys across the country arent fully aware of the treasonous talk and dangerous threats made against government officials by posters on the internet. I assure you they are and for that reason, any quintessentially American revolt or secession will be over almost before it starts, thank God!
Ahh! So my right to free speech has gone the way of my right to hunt the King's deer, eh? Shall I quail and shiver and hide under the bed? You obviously do not understand how Western (and Southern) men think at all. Your threat just makes the broader threat even more apparent, and steels the resolve to speak out all the more. And do not thank God. Such a threat is not His doing. Thank "Big Brother", in whom your trust and confidence rests in this matter. As Sam Adams said, I hope your chains rest lightly on your shoulders.

A song for you from the Hag, hope you enjoy it. I wanta see Montana if I can ever afford the trip. Best wishes to you and yours from Ol’ Rip.
“Second issue, do you honestly believe that the Dems and ACORN didn’t work to fix election results?”
“Work” to fix it? I suspect so. The Repubs around here did too. Did they succeed in fixing the election? No.
“If so, you are on the wrong website.”
If your belief in secession, which is treason, or the belief in violence against federal officials recently espoused by posters on this site are in fact the fundamental beliefs of even a substantial minority of the posters on this site, then I would suggest that Free Republic is in danger of becoming considered as the locus of an ongoing criminal conspiracy, the professed intentions of the owners to the contrary notwithstanding. Are you part of a conspiracy to commit treason S and are you and your fellow travelers using this site to further that conspiracy?
“You obviously do not understand how Western (and Southern) men think at all.”
Oh please! Such drama! Don’t forget, the secessionist traitors lost the last time they tried out their cherished ideology and they’ll lose again. This time they’ll just get picked up one by one and thrown in jail on their way to the revolt.
And r, the rest of the country won’t be quaking with fear, it will be laughing at you. After that you get your fair trial. :)
Don't have any Carolina specific songs that come to mind, but how about some Zac Brown greets from a MT Hillbilly?
Not drama at all. Resolve. You don't have a clue.
Dont forget, the secessionist traitors lost the last time they tried out their cherished ideology and theyll lose again.
You are repeating yourself. Win or lose doesn't enter into it. It is a matter of right and wrong. Freedom vs. oppression. The people are sovereign in their states. The federation is a tool of the people and their states, it is not the other way around. If the fed does not recognize that they have gone way too far (including both parties), and that states are even now drawing lines that will not be crossed, the only recourse left us is rebellion.
As the saying goes, there are four boxes available to the American people: the soap box, the ballot box, the jury box and the cartridge box.
If the ballot box is corrupted, as the two major parties no longer listen to the people, the soap box (in it's use with the vote, I mean) went with it. The jury box is corrupted by judges who rule by edict from the bench, and are not removed for it by our representatives. What is left us then?
This time theyll just get picked up one by one and thrown in jail on their way to the revolt.
And you like that? You must be insane. First they will come for me. Then they will come for YOU. Them that do not know history are doomed to repeat it.
And r, the rest of the country wont be quaking with fear, it will be laughing at you.
Let them laugh. They'll get theirs. And when they do, they'll have no defense at all.
After that you get your fair trial. :)
No, If that is how it goes, that ain't how that will work out.
“Win or lose doesn’t enter into it.”
That’s the usual cry of the loser, r.
“It is a matter of right and wrong.”
Not in politics, r. That mindset is why extremism always loses in the end in America.
“...the only recourse left us is rebellion.”
You promise, r? :)
“And you like that?”
Absolutely! I’d much rather have the traitors picked up on the way to their revolt, tried and hanged in an orderly fashion than take a chance on anarchy, even a little anarchy, where innocents could get hurt! :)
“Let them laugh.”
Indeed they will laugh, just like the people did to Shay after his pathetic revolt fizzled. Shay wasn’t hung. The government figured he was such a figure of fun for the people they let him live. Today, well, I don’t know. It might be best to have public hangings, at least of the leaders of the revolt you envision. They would provide both great entertainment and an object lesson.
I have lost nothing.
Not in politics, r. That mindset is why extremism always loses in the end in America.
This isn't politics.
You promise, r? :)
Not yet, but gettin' close.
Absolutely! Id much rather have the traitors picked up on the way to their revolt, tried and hanged in an orderly fashion than take a chance on anarchy, even a little anarchy, where innocents could get hurt! :)
Enjoy your submission. Freedom is not anarchy.
Today, well, I dont know. It might be best to have public hangings, at least of the leaders of the revolt you envision. They would provide both great entertainment and an object lesson.
Yes! or maybe crosses! or pikes! It never fails to amaze me how tyranny, and those who would submit to it, never change.
It's not treason, it's a right to change a government which no longer works for the people.
Are you part of a conspiracy to commit treason S and are you and your fellow travelers using this site to further that conspiracy?
Are you a governmental interloper hoping to entrap people on this website? I further no secret plot as I am quite open about my political beliefs. You, OTOH, seem to harbor an inane dislike of those who will exercise their freedom of speech.
