Governor Says Texas Can Leave Union If It Wants (with audio)
Houston Chronicle ^ | April 15, 2009

"Texas is a unique place. When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that," Perry said. "My hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention. We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, who knows what may come of that."

Texas could easily leave tomorrow.

I mean, who’s going to stop them?

Do you seriously see and hippies or fi-fi NYC types volunteering for uncle O to bring them back in?

Now, put in a call to Palin, Barbour, Sanford, Riley, Otter, Hoeven, and Jindel. Get them together, and then we have a conservative movement. — Doesn’t have to be secession, just has to be a “states’ rights” alternative that we can rally around.

But we have lots of oil. And that my friend can buy a lot! We could also withhold that oil from socialists states like New York. I say let em freeze in the dark!

Actually, Texas consumes more oil than it produces.

If Texas did leave the union, we would at least have one ally we could trust on our southern border.

The problem for Texas is they'd have no allies they could trust on any of their borders.

I am a native Texan, but lived in OK for 7 years and loved it. Also feel confident they would joint us.

Sam Houston went to live with the Indians in OK at one point, Except for football we have a lot in common. (My daughter is an OU grad)

How long do you think it would be before OK. & LA. would want to join them?

Texas is in great economic condition however, it by no means would be one of the top four or five economies by GDP in the world.

Unfettering itself from Washington's crazy policies, unshackling gas & oil from the enslavement of the Greens, practicing free trade, and freeing her citizens of high taxation would pretty much ensure that within 10 years, it would be.

Even today, Texas, Our Texas, is the second most populous state of our current 50.

Texas also controls some very important ports for foreign oil. I would like to see them bring those freighters around Texas and where? California? Maryland? Louisiana already has oil in their ports. I could see the NIMBY crowds in California loving those tankers of oil and other goods show up on their pretty beaches.

You’d have to move before we secede. We would close the borders on both sides.

VinL,

If several governors got together and actually suggested secession, they’d all be arrested. Perry said Texas has the right to secede. He didn’t recommend it.

But knowing Perry he would immediately move for us to join Mexico.

Unfettering itself from Washington's crazy policies, unshackling gas & oil from the enslavement of the Greens...

There are no viable areas in Texas that are off limits to E&P.

I seem to recall that Texas already left the Union and it did not work out all that well.

Well, you know how the old saying goes: If at first you don't secede, try, try again.

The place is full of high-tech industry and major players in the military-industrial complex.

It really could be "a whole other country".

We had a nice discussion on this topic a couple of months ago. It is difficult to imagine how much freedom an independent Texas would have, since we’re so used to have a nanny in Washington watching our every move. Check out the thread to see what was discussed, and comment if you want.

I despise Perry (mainly for selling control of our highways to private and foreign ownership, and then giving them monopoly protection to charge whatever tolls they can get), but his statement brings “The ‘S’ Word” out of Kooksville and into mainstream discussion...it was a gutsy move by that jerk, and it can only help Texans...although I still hope he loses re-election.

This movement may catch fire now...it will be interesting.

Dude, I’m talking anout the onerous cap and trade CO2 legislation right around the corner..the largest tax increase in history. Not having to play that silly game that alone will have Texas on an equal competitive footing with say, China, Russia, and India — all of whom think AGW is a religion practiced by pampered, indulgent upper class whites.

Better off dividing into 4 states, that would mean 6 new GOP Senators.
