National GOP to Back Specter
American Spectator ^ | on 4.14.09 @ 4:28PM | By W. James Antle, III

Posted on 04/14/2009 2:30:55 PM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn has thrown his weight behind Sen. Arlen Specter, who is likely to face a tough renomination fight against former Club for Growth President Pat Toomey:

"My job as head of the NRSC is to guide the GOP back to a majority in the Senate," wrote Cornyn to Pennsylvania Republicans. "I can't do that without Arlen Specter. With him as our nominee, I can target our campaign resources toward beating Democrats and growing the Senate Republican Conference."

The Senate is like a country club. They will *always* protect their own (well, except Ted Stevens and Larry Craig...). I don’t like Specter any more than anyone else here but it is a pipe dream to think that Senate Republicans aren’t going to back an incumbent against an upstart. After all, if Toomey loses and Specter returns, who wants Specter to flee the reservation like Jeffords did?

This shouldn’t stop the Toomey supporters. You’ll see these guys change their tune if Toomey wins the primary. The RNSC’s effect on the race is minimal.

Cornyn’s in a tough spot. They do need to defend incumbent Republicans or we are behind the 8-ball on getting to 50 Senators. But RINOs ruin the brand, worsen the GOP image, and sell out the base. RINOs like Specter are like a boat anchor on the whole GOP.

For me, NRSC support of this RINO will prevent me from supporting the NRSC, just when I was ready to come back to them.

The GOP is going down.

Unfortunately they will be taking the Country down with them.

The Republican Party has for too long urinated on my back and yet insisted that I was merely the victim of natural precipitation. Global warming, perhaps.

No more. I am an independent Conservative who will vote with like-minded souls on the basis of their core beliefs and not in respect of any affiliation with a once-great party that has now abandoned its principles in exchange for being merely tolerated by people I detest.

Specter and his Sweeties not only backed the bill....they voted in a hurry.

Any one of them had the power to:

—make sure everyone had the time to read it.

—assure it was examined in committee.

—make sure it was posted on the internet, per the President’s promise,

—force transparency.

All it would have taken is a “present” vote. They couldn’t even do that.

The Senate is supposed tobe a “deliberative “body. It appears none of the 3 can even spell the word, let alone explain it’s meaning.

I’m sure having Gabriel Giffords (D) instead of Randy Graf (R) in the House helps the GOP as well. At least, that would explain why the GOP interfered in the primary in AZ8...

Picking candidates is too important to be left to popular vote. Look at McCain.

“What most posters missed is that Cornyn gave verbal support (which I wished he had not), but also said they would not give Specter money.”

Ah, another example of Freepers shooting off mouth first and asking questions later...

No money? Just lip service to a colleague?

Good job Cornyn. Right way to play.

I’ll watc carefully. If no money to Specter, then I’ll give NRSC money in 2010 general election. ....

And of course, good idea to donate to Toomey.

"My job as head of the NRSC is to guide the GOP back to a majority in the Senate," wrote Cornyn

No Stupid. Your job is to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. If your political party or anyone in it stands in your way then help remove them from office. Specter is the Poster Child for removal. If you enable those standing in the way of removing him in the primaries then you sir are indeed as much of the problem as the DEMS are.

DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING!

NO More Calls, please.

We have a winner!

P.S. That looks like a god-awful mix of Edgar Winter, Jonathan Cain (Jounrey), Robert Helpmann (child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), and Tom Petty.

Cheers!

GOP saw the polling data. The Mod Squad guy was ‘more electable’ than the hard Right guy. Polls always show that.

Result: Another circular firing squad.

How much of an Obama clone has Giffords turned out to be?

Think I'll send it back with a Tea Bag in it.

Unfortunately the Tea Bag will cause the letter to be rejected, they are suggesting that you remove the tea bag and just include the tag you can pull of the bag.

the magic bullet....

the little idea that has kept this man in the senate....

payback for a little help for his friends

fyi...

The chief architect of the “single bullet theory” was the Warren Commission’s ambitious junior counsel, Arlen Specter, now U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. ...

My Senator has lost his mind! To hell with the rino party!

The RINO Party Alert.

Just say no to liberals, turncoats, and traitors!

We don't intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended.
We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals of our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the party over to the so-called moderates wouldn't make any sense at all.

If there is no doubt about the outcome, she is allowed to vote IAW her district. If there is doubt, she’s in Pelosi’s pocket. She was one of a few democrats on the bailout bill that hung out in the well, ready to change her no vote to yes if it was needed.

She isn’t for sale, because she’s already bought.

BTW - conservatives always look bad in polls before the primary, because the press always portrays them as evil, hate-filled idiots.

If conservatives get nominated, they CAN get elected IF they make their case. But conservatives need to sell their platform, which they can never do before getting nominated (and sometimes cannot do WHEN nominated).

And when your party agrees with the media PRIOR to nomination, it is impossible to backpedal afterward.
