“Since the current transition now exceeds 568 spotless days, it is becoming clear that sun has undergone a state change. It is now evident that the Grand Maxima state that has persisted during most of the 20th century has come to an abrupt end.
“(The sun) might (1) revert to the old solar cycles or (2) the sun might go even quieter into a “Dalton Minimum” or a Grand Minima such as the “Maunder Minimum”. It is still a little early to predict which way it will swing. Each of these two possibilities holds a great threat to our nation.
“We are now at a crossroad. Two paths lie before us. Both are marked with a signpost that reads “Danger”! Down one path lies monstrous solar storms. Down the other path lies several decades of crushing cold temperatures and global famine.”

Spaceweather got stupid-cute and scrapped the 30 some odd day continual spotless count because a microspot was evaluated to have formed for a half-second by some agency in Belgium.

We are about 8,000 years overdue.
One theory holds that “greenhouse gases” created first by agriculture, then by industrialization have kept the overdue ice age in abeyance. In a sense, it's a variation of the “global warming” theme — except that global warming is what's keeping us from doom and gloom.
Obama can fix it, yes he can!

The last ice age ended about 12,500 years ago. The ice ages come in two frequencies, every 100 ky and every 40 ky (Milankovitch orbital climate forcing is one cause of the start/end of ice ages), so I’d say we had a way to go before the next “official” one.
Ice ages started about 3 my ago when the poles iced up, which for a reason I don’t understand started an oscillation in climate that seems to be linked to the small variations in Earth’s orbit.
Naturally, a series of big volcanoes and the sun suddenly putting out 6% less UV can be a cause, too.
Unfortunately, all this really shows is how little we
all really know!
Let’s see, the earth will contract if
the environment is a bit colder, adding to tectonic
shifts, with more earthquakes, volcanism, and more
particles in the atmosphere, which will warm the earths
surface...and then with the excess meteor dust the earth
picks up, and the sun picks up, the earths mass will increase,
the suns’ mass will get smaller(the meteor pickup is
negated by the sun losing mass as it nuclear burns up),and
the net effect will be that the earth will be a bit closer
to the sun as before(due to higher gravitational attraction)
Then the temp will really go up, causing more water in the
atmosphere, which will shield us from the suns heat, and
we’ll be the same temp as we were before, only the ones who
have evolved an air conditioning and heating unit will do
better...(oh, we got those things already?...you mean sweat,
and shivering?)
Just kidding.

I think the 8,000 years is about the length of the current warm period total. (Yeah - what a coincidence that you start seeing actual civilization start shortly after the temperatures get warmer!) But, the four(?) previous warm periods ended after about 6 to 8 thousand years IIRC.
And I think the impact that a few hundred thousand humans had on “global warming” would be negligable. Growing rice instead of wild rice would probably not be that big of a deal.
Even today, the amount of CO2 we put into the air is about 0.17% of the effective greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Warm-mongers cluck that global warming will doom us all.
Rational skeptics (e.g. myself, and most other Freepers)question the premise of AGW.
The possibility that there is a greenhouse gas effect — and that it's a very good thing — is seldom discussed.
It may be difficult for people living in hot southern climes to believe — but, a warmer planet would be a lot better than a colder planet, for most of us.
That's right ! Cuz if Our Dear Leader gets his way, the only ammo available will be “Oblammo.” 45 Caliber, black, jelly beans. The blue, Armour Star wiener piercing jelly beans will no longer be allowed for sale to the public. Only the One World UN Army will be supplied with the blue jelly beans, and only in the popular .07 mm.
