When dogs attack, owners can go to prison (Pit bulls kill child - Owners get 7 years)
WFAA-TV ^ | 1/19/2009 | JIM DOUGLAS

Posted on 04/06/2009 7:39:41 AM PDT by stinkerpot65

The scene was so gruesome that even seasoned emergency responders broke down and cried.

"They were never agressive; never seen them agressive," Watson said. "Never bit no one."

"I'm scared," Watson said. "I've got three kids who are going to be without a mom to be there for them."

Watson was sentenced to seven years in prison; that's part of the reason she can't stop crying.

Watson and Smith's four four pit bulls savagely attacked Tanner Monk last May near his home outside Breckenridge.

4 pit bulls allowed to run loose?

Spokane, were you saying that the parents of children who commit crimes should be held responsible for the acts of their minor children? Hmmm.

Nope. I was just trying to see how far one of the previous posters was willing to go with his support for jailing idiots. Jailing someone when they break a law is one thing, but jailing someone because they're an idiot and should have known better is a slippery slope.

Who were the parties to the agreement that allowed this little boy to be mauled to death? Look, I just don't like pit bulls. They're dangerous and there is no sense in having them. There are plenty of other outstanding dog breeds to choose from. You can be responsible and still have your pit bull get loose and hurt someone or hurt someone on your property. This is not just about personal responsibility. Dogs have minds of their own.

This is no big issue of mine. I'm not pushing for anything. But if my city or my state wanted to ban pit bulls, they'd get no opposition from me. In fact I'd vote for such a ban if given the opportunity. Those animals are a menace.

Would it be ok if the Feds passed a ban on certain breeds and sent armed ATFE agents to enforce it? Would you vote to ban machine guns from your community? These are not rhetorical or argumentative questions, they are legitimate responses to your percieved need for government control and safety. I realize there is no second amendment right to own a dog, but there are lots of natural rights that aren't spelled out. Have you ever been kicked by a donkey? Why should anyone be allowed to own one of those when horses are much less likely to do that?

In short, you are proposing a bit of statism that seems to make sense to you, but solves nothing since bad people will abuse other breeds. Worse, it acclimatizes the sheeple towards totalitarian government control instead of enforcing responsible behavior if there is reasonable suspicion of irresponsible behavior.

Or we just ban all dogs period. I guess that would be the solution to all the problems. If you think about it, once Pitbulls are banned and the breed is erased, then any other breed that bites or attacks anyone is next to be eradicated from the face of the earth. Great logic in that thinking.

Also, any dog over say 20lbs is capable of visciously attacking or mauling an infant or child. So the analogy of a BB gun compared to a have MG doesn’t work. Last I checked you can die just as easily from a .22 shot as a .50Cal. My point, is that the Pitbull breed has been a popular target because so many drug dealers and “gangsta” wannabe’s have sybolized them as power. Rottweilers are just as dangerous, and hell you beat any dog down enough and don’t feed it, then yeah it’s gonna attack and be viscious. I have Pitbulls, I love the loyalty and protection they offer my family, but when my freedom to own one is in jeopardy then I get a little defensive, same with my freedom to own a firearm of any kind.

Bear in mind, my Pitbulls and firearms combined have harmed and killed less people than Ted Kennedys car.

According to this Pit bulls are responsible for 27% of the total fatalities and they aren’t even in the top fifty most popular breeds. How can you not say they are a special case. All these fatalities can’t be laid at the feet of the owners. Most of these owners are not Michael Vick. They’re people who thought this stuff only happened to other people who had mistreated the dogs. Sadly they found out too late these dogs can’t be trusted.

I would not own a pit bull unless I wanted a good attack dog; that’s from common knowledge. Anybody who owns the breed knows about the stories of this dog-breed-of-peace tearing into the flesh of innocent children and others.

No person should be surprised that a pit bull attacked anything....it’s what they do.

Wow you’ve resorted to calling quite a few of us “idiots”. Not a very mature way to have a discussion. Can you reference your facts for your comment of “All dogs bite, not all dogs kill.” statement, i’d really like to see the percentages of say German Shepards to Pits, or Rottweilers?

"Nothing wrong with having 200 lb chimp in diapers in your home in a residential neighborhood. (sic) "

Yeah, why was that thing in diapers, anyway. Couldn't it have been trained to use the toilet? They trained it in everything else; why not the toilet?

Agreed! But these people are delusional until it happens to them and then all we hear is how peaceful the dog was before it savaged the child.

The feds have no business banning dog breeds. If a city or a state banned pit bulls I would not have a problem with it.

“... but solves nothing since bad people will abuse other breeds.”

You don't have to abuse pit bulls for them to be dangerous. Abusing them might make them more aggressive and more likely to attack people, but even well loved pit bulls have been known to maul people.

I'm not going to continue with this conversation. I have too much work to do and I really could care less about this issue. I don't like pit bulls. They are dangerous animals and it wouldn't bother me if there were strict laws passed regulating how these animals are kept or banning them outright. That's no different to me than laws that keep people from having pet lions and tigers and alligators. You can have a kitty cat, but you can't have a pet lion in your home. I don't have a problem with that. If you want to call me a statist, I don't care. I don't have enough time or interest to argue about this further. Have a nice day.

Because with proper supervision and adequate care, they are wonderful pets.

They require more, but give back more.
I’m guessing that less than five percent of the people that own pit bulls actually should, which is why we have attacks like this so frequently. People think that pits are no different than a lab, and that’s just dead wrong.

I became a pit owner by accident, and very nearly gave him up right afterwards as I also have five small children. However, with the help of a small group of bully lovers I became more knowledgeable about the breed, and decided it was worth the extra time training, excercising etc.

Swiper has given us nothing but joy since then.

dogbites

Pit bulls kill more people than any other breed and pits+rotweillers round out the vast majority of deaths.

Since January 1, 2006, Texas has suffered 15 fatalities due to dog attacks. Of these fatalities, 80% (12) were attributed to pit bulls, 13% (2) to rottweilers and 7% (1) to the combination of a doberman and shepherd.

Kids are more than 3 times more likely to be attacked by dogs.

You think I am immature to call pit owners IDIOTS. Well, I'll one up myself. By continuing the demand for pit bulls and arguing against banning the breed, they are partially responsible for the unnecessary deaths and maulings of innocents.

The Dog Genom,e Study is underway.

When scientists figure out where in the gene structure of these breeds ... indeed any breed .... this behavior comes from, perhaps screening can be done as part of the licensing procedure.

What we have now is not working. I can take you places within 5 miles of my home where all kinds of breeds with a bad record, including wolves! are being intentionally cross-bred. The Pit Bull craze (Presa Canario, Dogo Argentino, Rottweiler, etc ) is doing America as much good as full body tattoos, body piercing, and meth-cooking motrcycle gangs ... all related phenomena. Sad and scary.

Typical comment from family members of folks who go nuts and shoot people too. Who wants to say, “Yeah, I knew the dog was aggressive (Or the person was a time bomb waiting to go off)?” It’s not just pit bull owners. It’s virtually everyone who is afraid they might have some responsibility for something bad that happened.

“Kids are more than 3 times more likely to be attacked by dogs.”

Atlest you didn’t say Pitbulls. However the media bias towards the Pitbull breed is outrageous. A Pitbull attacks someone then it’s titled “Viscious Pitbull Mauls Innocent”. Any other breed it’s “Child Attacked by Dog” with no mention of a breed. Your entitled to your opinion and i’m entitled to fight against it. You want to ban my dogs let’s ban cars too for killing all the innocent people on the roadways every day!

This can go on and on. Me I love my Pitbulls and don’t feel the gubmint should tell me what I can and can’t have. Stay outta my yard and you’ll have no problems with my Pits.

I’ll just opt to the fact that we’ll agree to disagree.

Like I told the last poster I really don't have time to continue with this discussion, but I will say this. I don't think we need to eradicate the breed. I'm not for federal bans on any dog breed. I'm just saying that if my town or my state wanted to ban pit bulls or put strict controls on them, it would not bother me. These are dangerous dogs. I've seen a lot of mauling cases come through court and it's usually a pit bull that did it. If we didn't have any pit bulls in our area, there would be less maulings. I don't see any difference in prohibiting people from keeping pit bulls and prohibiting them from keeping lions and tigers when we'll let them have kitty cats. I'm sure you love your dogs, but I love my kids and I don't want them getting mauled by someone’s pit bull that gets lose or that they run into at a friend's house. I'm not pushing for anti-pit bull laws though. It's not a big issue for me at all. I'm just saying I wouldn't be bothered by local laws banning pit bulls.

Now if you will excuse me I have a lot of work to do and I'm not going to be able to continue with this thread.
